History & Heritage
The Rymill family's connection to Coonawarra is one of the deepest and most historically significant of any producer in the region. The family's land in Coonawarra was originally part of the pioneering Penola pastoral run established by John Riddoch — the visionary Scottish-born entrepreneur who planted the first vines in Coonawarra in 1890 and is widely regarded as the father of the Coonawarra wine industry. The Rymill family acquired their Coonawarra property in the early 20th century, and it was not until 1974 that Peter Rymill established the winery that bears the family name, recognising the extraordinary potential of the terra rossa soils that had been part of the family's heritage for generations.
Today, Rymill Coonawarra is managed by winemakers Lewis White and Maria Best, whose meticulous approach to viticulture and winemaking has produced a body of work that consistently demonstrates the depth, elegance, and longevity that Coonawarra's unique terroir can achieve. The estate's vineyards — including the celebrated Riddoch Run vineyard, named in honour of John Riddoch and planted between 1975 and 1989 — are among the most distinguished sites in the region, producing fruit of exceptional concentration, complexity, and regional character.
The Region: Coonawarra, South Australia
Coonawarra is one of Australia's most celebrated and distinctive wine regions — a narrow, cigar-shaped strip of land approximately 15 kilometres long and less than 2 kilometres wide in the Limestone Coast of South Australia, approximately 380 kilometres southeast of Adelaide. The region's extraordinary reputation rests on a single, defining geological feature: its famous terra rossa soils — a thin layer of rich, red-brown clay loam sitting directly over a bed of free-draining white limestone — that produce wines of a character and quality unlike anything achievable on the surrounding black rendzina soils.
The terra rossa — Italian for ‘red earth’ — is Coonawarra's most precious asset. The red colour comes from the iron oxide in the clay, and the combination of the clay's water-retaining properties and the limestone's free drainage creates a growing environment of remarkable balance: the vines have access to consistent moisture throughout the growing season without the waterlogging that would inhibit root development and fruit quality. The limestone subsoil forces vine roots deep into the earth in search of nutrients, producing grapes of greater concentration, complexity, and mineral character than shallow-rooted vines can achieve.
Coonawarra's climate is cool and maritime — one of the coolest of any Australian red wine region — moderated by the proximity of the Southern Ocean and the Bass Strait. The region's long, cool growing season allows grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, developing the natural acidity, aromatic complexity, and structural elegance that define the Coonawarra style. Grape Varieties
Cabernet Sauvignon is the undisputed king of Coonawarra and the variety that has built Rymill's reputation. The combination of Coonawarra's cool climate, terra rossa soils, and limestone subsoil produces Cabernet Sauvignon of extraordinary elegance and longevity — blackcurrant, mint, and eucalyptus on the nose, with firm, fine-grained tannins, natural acidity, and the structural precision that allows the wines to age magnificently for a decade or more. Shiraz is Coonawarra's other great red variety, producing wines of a distinctly different character from the warmer-region Shirazes of the Barossa or McLaren Vale. Coonawarra Shiraz is medium to full-bodied, with characteristic dark cherry, forest fruit, and white pepper notes, fine-grained tannins, and a structural elegance that reflects the cool climate and terra rossa terroir. Dark Horse Shiraz — Sourced from Block 8 within the Riddoch Run vineyard, planted in 1989 on red clay over limestone. Deep violet with cherries, forest fruits, and vanilla layered with dark cocoa, white pepper, and savoury salted plum. Maraschino cherry and ripe berry on the palate, underpinned by toasted oak, white pepper, and medium dusty tannins. Cellaring potential of 5–7 years.
The Classic Release Range — The pinnacle of the Rymill range, crafted with cellaring firmly in mind from select blocks of the Riddoch Run vineyard. Extended skin contact, careful oak maturation, and the patience to release only when the wine is ready.
