Winemaking Notes

Rymill Dark Horse Shiraz 2023 is sourced from a small section of the imaginatively named Block 8 Shiraz within Rymill's northern Coonawarra Riddoch Run vineyards. Planted in 1989 on some particularly beautiful red clay over limestone, this block's flavour profile tends to lean towards dark stonefruits, creating a distinctive character that sets this wine apart. For this release of Dark Horse, the winemaking team has focused on delivering these fruit flavours with finely structured, close-packed tannins, emphasising smooth, refined texture rather than rough structure. The wine showcases maraschino cherry and ripe berry characters underpinned by toasted oak and white pepper, with medium dusty tannins providing exceptional balance. At 14.5% alcohol, the wine displays remarkable concentration whilst maintaining elegance and drinkability.

Vintage Conditions

The 2023 vintage in Coonawarra provided ideal conditions for producing exceptional Shiraz with deep colour, complex aromatics and well-balanced structure. The grapes were sourced from Block 8 within the Riddoch Run vineyards, where the beautiful red clay over limestone soils offered perfect conditions to develop the dark stonefruit flavours and finely structured tannins that define this release. The vintage produced fruit with great concentration of cherries, forest fruits and vanilla aromas layered with dark cocoa, white pepper and savoury salted plum, all balanced by medium dusty tannins and smooth texture. At release, the wine displays great length of fresh dark fruits; over the coming 5-7 years, it will reach ideal balance between primary fruit and oak characters and bottle-aged complexity, showcasing the unique terroir of Coonawarra's red clay over limestone and the artistry of Rymill's winemaking approach to Dark Horse Shiraz.
