Tahbilk Estate Chardonnay 2025 is an oak-aged Chardonnay from the Nagambie Lakes region of Victoria — one of Australia’s oldest family-owned wineries, with Chardonnay vines dating back to 1927 and a wetlands-influenced terroir that has shaped the estate’s wines for generations. The 2025 vintage benefited from ideal growing conditions: good spring rains followed by a warm, dry, and trouble-free season that produced excellent fruit quality with vibrant natural acidity. Melon, white peach, citrus, spice, and butterscotch with lively acidity and a refreshing finish. Enjoy now to 2028/2030.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Pale lemon to straw with brilliant clarity — the hallmark of a clean, well-made Chardonnay from a trouble-free vintage.

Aroma

Generous and inviting — melon and white peach lead with stone fruit richness, complemented by citrus brightness, nougat nuttiness, butterscotch, and gentle spice from extended oak maturation. A fragrant, immediately appealing aromatic profile.

Palate

Plenty of flavour layered between oak and spice, with robust stone fruit character underpinning honeyed nougat. Melon, white peach, and citrus fruits dominate, complemented by the spice and butterscotch notes developed during oak maturation. The 2025 vintage’s vibrant natural acidity — shaped by the warm, dry growing season and the moderating influence of Tahbilk’s surrounding waterways and wetlands — drives the finish with lemony freshness and precision. A wine set to high drinkability upon release, with immediate generosity of flavour and texture.

Pairs With

Pairs beautifully with roast pork and vegetables, roast chicken, creamy pasta dishes, grilled seafood, soft cheeses, mushroom risotto, and rich poultry preparations.

Wine Sellers Direct Verdict

Tahbilk Estate Chardonnay 2025 is consistently excellent value for oak-aged Victorian Chardonnay — a wine that over-delivers at its price point, backed by one of Australia’s most historically significant wine estates. The 2025 vintage is particularly compelling: the warm, dry, trouble-free growing season produced fruit of excellent quality with the vibrant natural acidity that defines the Tahbilk style, and the moderating influence of the estate’s surrounding wetlands kept the fruit remarkably clean and precise. Compared to Mitchelton Estate Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2025, Tahbilk is more generously oak-influenced and immediately approachable — choose Mitchelton if you prefer tighter acidity and less oak; compared to Punt Road Chardonnay 2025, Tahbilk is richer and more oak-driven — choose Punt Road for cooler-climate elegance and restraint. This is the bottle we would recommend when you want a serious, oak-aged Victorian Chardonnay without the serious price tag. Best for: everyday drinking and casual entertaining. Style: generous, fruit-forward, oak-spiced. Occasion: weeknight dinner through to weekend entertaining.

Who Should Drink This?

Tahbilk Estate Chardonnay 2025 is for lovers of generous, oak-influenced Australian Chardonnay who want the character and complexity of a serious white wine at an accessible everyday price. It is the natural choice for anyone who enjoys the Tahbilk house style — melon, white peach, and citrus with oak spice and lively acidity — and an excellent introduction to Nagambie Lakes Chardonnay for those new to the region.

Why Is Tahbilk Famous?

Tahbilk is one of Australia’s oldest and most historically significant family-owned wineries — a Nagambie Lakes pioneer with a continuous winemaking history stretching back to 1860. The estate’s unique terroir is shaped by the surrounding waterways and wetlands of the Nagambie Lakes region, which moderate temperatures and preserve natural acidity in the fruit. Chardonnay has been part of the Tahbilk story since scattered vines were identified in a historic ‘fruit salad’ vineyard block dating to 1927, with extensive plantings following in 1979. The Estate Chardonnay — the only white wine from the estate to spend extended time in oak — has been produced commercially since 1988 and remains one of the most consistent expressions of the Tahbilk house style.

What’s Similar?

Mitchelton Estate Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2025 is the natural Nagambie Lakes comparison — choose this if you prefer tighter acidity and a more restrained oak influence from the same region. Chrismont Chardonnay 2024 offers a King Valley alternative with a more regional fruit expression and lighter oak. Punt Road Chardonnay 2025 is the cooler-climate option — choose this for Yarra Valley elegance and finer acidity over Tahbilk’s generous, oak-driven style.

Winery & Vintage Info

Vintage Conditions
The 2025 vintage in the Nagambie Lakes region was characterised by good spring rains followed by a warm, dry, and trouble-free growing season. This ideal weather produced excellent grape yields and high fruit quality with vibrant natural acidity. Spring rains set up healthy vine growth; summer and autumn eased into a low-stress harvest period that kept fruit remarkably clean. The local waterways and wetlands surrounding Tahbilk Estate provided a moderating effect against surrounding heat — a defining feature of the estate’s terroir and a key contributor to the vintage’s characteristic freshness and precision.

Winemaking Notes
Tahbilk Estate Chardonnay is the only white wine from the estate to spend extended time in oak prior to bottling, a tradition established since the first commercial vintage was released in 1988. The fruit comes from vines planted extensively in 1979, with scattered vines identified as Chardonnay in a historic ‘fruit salad’ vineyard block dating back to 1927. The winemaking approach focuses on developing the wine’s characteristic melon, white peach, and citrus fruit profile whilst allowing oak maturation to impart spice and butterscotch notes that add complexity and depth. This extended time in oak creates the enticing nougat nuttiness and mocha cream character that complements the robust stone fruit, whilst preserving the lively Tahbilk acidity that drives the finish. Enjoy now through to 2028/2030.
