Domaine A Merlot 2020 is an exceptionally small release from Tasmania's Coal River Valley. Merlot was a particular favourite of estate founder Peter Althaus, although Domaine A reserved standalone releases for selected vintages.
The difficult 2020 growing season brought reduced yields and slow ripening, but the remaining fruit provided the concentration and character for this release. Winemaker Conor Van Der Reest drew on two vineyard blocks to produce a Merlot described as having smooth tannins, depth and savoury complexity.
After an initial period in oak, a selected portion underwent a further two years of maturation in a new barrique before bottling in July 2023. This unusually patient approach reflects the estate's Bordeaux-inspired winemaking philosophy.
With just 252 bottles released, this is a distinctive opportunity to discover Domaine A's interpretation of Tasmanian Merlot, particularly for those who enjoy structured, savoury red wines.

Nose
Dark plum, black cherry and blueberry characters, with savoury spice and subtle dark chocolate notes adding complexity.
Palate
Generous dark berry and plum fruit, supported by smooth, fine-grained tannins. Savoury undertones and a measured oak influence bring depth and structure without overwhelming the fruit.
Finish
Dark fruit and savoury spice carry through to a structured finish, with fine tannins providing a sense of length and balance.
