Winemaking Notes
The Punt Road Chardonnay 2025 was meticulously crafted from fruit harvested across various blocks throughout the estate, with each block carefully selected based on its unique flavour characteristics and natural acid levels to create a fresh, fruit-driven expression of Yarra Valley Chardonnay. This thoughtful block selection allowed the winemaking team to build complexity whilst maintaining the wine's vibrant, crisp character. Following harvest, the fruit was gently pressed and the juice transferred to French oak barrels—20% new oak and 80% seasoned—where it underwent natural fermentation using indigenous yeasts. This hands-off approach allowed the wine's inherent character and terroir to express themselves fully, whilst the combination of new and seasoned oak provided subtle complexity without overwhelming the fruit's purity. Throughout the maturation period, the wine received regular lees stirring (bâtonnage), a traditional technique that builds textural depth and creamy mouthfeel whilst adding layers of complexity. This careful balance of natural fermentation, judicious oak use and lees contact has resulted in a Chardonnay that showcases both the vibrancy of the fruit and the sophisticated texture that defines premium Yarra Valley winemaking.

Vintage Conditions
The 2025 vintage in the Yarra Valley presented unique growing conditions that ultimately delivered wines of exceptional elegance and complexity. Despite a cooler growing season that initially challenged the region, the estate experienced a mild summer with moderate temperatures and gentle conditions that proved ideal for Chardonnay production. This cooler start to the season, followed by the mild summer weather, allowed for gradual fruit maturation—a crucial factor in developing the complex and elegant flavours that define this vintage. The extended ripening period enabled the grapes to achieve full physiological maturity whilst retaining excellent natural acidity, the hallmark of fine cool-climate Chardonnay. The absence of extreme heat events meant the fruit developed concentrated flavours slowly and evenly, building aromatic complexity and maintaining the fresh, vibrant character that makes Yarra Valley Chardonnay so distinctive. Harvest took place under optimal conditions, with fruit arriving at the winery in pristine condition, displaying the perfect balance of ripe apple and citrus flavours, natural acidity and subtle minerality that marks this outstanding vintage.
