Devil's Corner — Where Hazard Meets Haven
Tasmania is known as one of the finest places on earth to grow Pinot Noir — and Devil's Corner is one of the island's most celebrated and distinctive wine producers, harnessing the rugged peaks, generous soils, and uniquely maritime climate of Tasmania's East Coast to craft wines of extraordinary purity, precision, and cool-climate character. In a place where hazard meets haven, Devil's Corner produces premium Pinot Noir, sparkling Cuvée, and a range of cool-climate whites that are a genuine expression of one of the world's most remarkable wine-growing environments.
The Region: Tasmania's East Coast
Tasmania is Australia's island state — separated from the mainland by the Bass Strait and surrounded by the Southern Ocean, the Tasman Sea, and the Indian Ocean. This extraordinary geographical isolation gives Tasmania a climate unlike any other wine-growing region in Australia — cool, maritime, and subject to the full force of the Roaring Forties, the powerful westerly winds that sweep across the Southern Ocean and moderate temperatures across the island throughout the growing season.
The East Coast of Tasmania — where Devil's Corner's flagship Hazards Vineyard is located — is one of the island's most distinctive and celebrated wine-growing areas. Sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds by the Central Highlands, the East Coast enjoys a warmer and drier microclimate than much of the rest of Tasmania, with long, sunny days and cool nights that create ideal conditions for producing Pinot Noir and cool-climate whites of exceptional ripeness, aromatic complexity, and natural acidity. The Freycinet Peninsula and the Hazards mountain range — whose dramatic pink granite peaks rise directly from the Tasman Sea — provide the dramatic backdrop against which Devil's Corner's wines are grown.
The Hazards Vineyard — named for the Hazards mountain range that overlooks it — is Devil's Corner's most celebrated and distinctive site. Located on the shores of Great Oyster Bay on the East Coast, the vineyard benefits from the moderating influence of the bay, the shelter of the Hazards peaks, and the free-draining dolerite and sandstone soils that produce grapes of exceptional concentration and mineral character. The combination of maritime influence, cool nights, and the unique terroir of the East Coast produces Pinot Noir of a character that is immediately and unmistakably Tasmanian — vibrant, precise, and deeply expressive of its extraordinary place of origin.
Devil's Corner also sources fruit from the Tamar Valley in northern Tasmania — one of the island's most established and celebrated wine regions, known for its Riesling, Chardonnay, and sparkling wine production — and from the King Valley in Victoria for the Pinot Grigio, blending the cool-climate precision of Tasmania with the aromatic generosity of the mainland.
Grape Varieties
Pinot Noir is the variety that defines Devil's Corner and the reason Tasmania has earned its extraordinary reputation as one of the world's great cool-climate wine regions. Tasmania's cool, maritime climate and long growing season allow Pinot Noir to ripen slowly and evenly, developing the vibrant red and dark cherry fruit, silky tannins, and the savoury, earthy complexity that define the variety at its finest. Devil's Corner produces two tiers of Pinot Noir — the approachable, fruit-forward estate expression and the more concentrated, structured Resolution Pinot Noir, sourced from the Hazards Vineyard and crafted with greater winemaking intensity including hand plunging in open-top fermenters and maturation in French oak.
Chardonnay produces wines of vibrant melon and nectarine aromatics, precise citrus dimensions, and a beautifully balanced creamy texture in Tasmania's cool climate — a style of genuine elegance and restraint that is a world away from the heavy, over-oaked Chardonnays of warmer regions.
Sauvignon Blanc from Tasmania is a uniquely expressive style — crisp and fresh with wild aromas of passionfruit and tropical fruit, and a long, balanced finish that reflects the island's cool maritime character.
Riesling is one of Tasmania's most exciting and age-worthy white varieties, producing wines of zesty citrus and lemon blossom aromatics, laser-sharp natural acidity, and the mineral precision that speaks directly of the island's dolerite and sandstone soils. Sourced from East Coast and Tamar Valley vineyards.
Pinot Grigio is produced from a blend of King Valley and Tasmanian fruit, combining the aromatic generosity of the mainland with the cool-climate precision and acidity of Tasmania.
Pinot Noir Rosé is a beautifully fresh and elegant expression of Tasmania's Pinot Noir, crafted in a dry, restrained style that showcases the variety's natural red fruit character and the island's signature cool-climate acidity.
