S.C. Pannell Field Street Shiraz 2023 is McLaren Vale Shiraz at its purest, sourced primarily from the esteemed Merrivale block on Olivers Road. This warm-climate Shiraz is stripped of winemaking artifice to express the breadth and purity of McLaren Vale fruit, preserving flavour without losing weight, richness, or intensity.
Appearance
Deep, rich garnet with excellent clarity, reflecting the concentration and quality of this challenging vintage.
Aroma
A deep well of complex aromatics: iodine, umami, soy, tar, Chambord liqueur, and blackcurrant, followed by terracotta and sandalwood. The fruit sits happily inside the dark, savoury flavours, creating an intriguing and layered bouquet.
Palate
Lively and sprightly, like a quick dash across the dance floor, impressing with its easy glide and confidence. A bay leaf crunch accentuates the tannins in the mid-palate, making way for a dark and savoury finish. The wine showcases elegance and great flavour—a testament to meticulous vineyard management during the 2023 vintage, one of the most challenging growing seasons in living memory.
The Olivers Road component was gently crushed and fermented in open-top fermenters with daily pump-overs, spending 15 days on skins. Extended maturation in old French oak puncheons for five months preceded blending with Shiraz from Clarendon. Bottled without additions or fining, this wine expresses terroir with honesty and purity.
Pairs With
Cheeseburgers, Oklahoma City smash burgers, grilled lamb, beef brisket, mushroom risotto, aged cheddar

Winery & Vintage Info
The S.C. Pannell Field Street Shiraz 2023 is crafted with minimal intervention to preserve the purity and breadth of McLaren Vale fruit. Sourced primarily from the esteemed Merrivale block on Olivers Road, with a complementary component from Clarendon, this wine embodies Stephen Pannell's philosophy of stripping away winemaking artifice. The Olivers Road fruit was picked on 16th March, gently crushed, and fermented in open-top fermenters with daily pump-overs, spending 15 days on skins to extract optimal flavour and structure. Following fermentation, the wine settled in tank for 23 days before being transferred to old French oak puncheons for malolactic fermentation. Extended maturation in old French oak for five months allowed the wine to develop complexity whilst preserving its lively character, before blending with the Clarendon component. Bottled in early December 2024 without additions or fining, this wine expresses terroir with honesty and purity, showcasing Stephen's commitment to preserving fruit flavours without losing weight, richness, or intensity.
Vintage Conditions
The 2023 vintage presented one of the most challenging growing seasons in living memory, marking the third year of the current La Niña cycle. High winter rainfall continued through spring, delaying bud-burst and shoot growth, whilst unusually high soil moisture made spraying and mid-row management particularly demanding. Thankfully, a dry, mild summer followed, though the die was cast—harvest became one of the latest on record. These contradictory conditions resulted in low crops with long hang times, an uncommon combination that ultimately produced wines of elegance and great flavour. The vintage relied heavily on meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard, with careful management proving essential to achieving quality. Despite the challenges, the extended ripening period allowed the fruit to develop remarkable complexity and depth, resulting in a wine that beautifully expresses the character of McLaren Vale whilst showcasing the resilience and skill required to craft exceptional wine in difficult conditions.
