Montalto Estate Pinot Noir 2024 is a wine of genuine complexity and Mornington Peninsula character — a hand-harvested, wild-fermented Pinot Noir of striking aromatic depth and a palate that surprises with its brightness and freshness. Dark cherry and Black Dorris plum, sarsaparilla, roasted meats, bramble, crushed sage, and lifted whole-bunch aromatics of parsnips, beets, ink, and star anise on the nose, with baking spice from oak. On the palate the wine reveals more red fruit than the nose suggests — red cherry and raspberry, bright and fresh, with chalky structured tannin and a long, savoury finish that lingers with a hint of Negroni and blood orange.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Deep ruby with a vibrant crimson rim — the concentrated, expressive colour of a hand-harvested Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir from one of the Peninsula’s most celebrated estate vineyards, with the clarity and depth that wild fermentation and careful winemaking deliver.

Aroma

Complex and captivating — dark cherry and Black Dorris plum lead, with sarsaparilla, roasted meats, and stock cube adding savoury depth. Bramble, crushed sage, and lifted whole-bunch aromatics of parsnips, beets, ink, and star anise weave through, with oak-influenced baking spice completing a bouquet of extraordinary complexity and character.

Palate

Brighter and fresher than the nose suggests — red cherry and raspberry carry through a palate of genuine elegance, with chalky structured tannin providing definition and a long, savoury finish that lingers with a memorable hint of Negroni and blood orange. A Pinot Noir of real distinction and Mornington Peninsula soul.

Pairs With

Montalto Estate Pinot Noir 2024 pairs beautifully with duck confit, roasted salmon, mushroom risotto, pinot-braised lamb, and aged soft cheeses — a wine of genuine versatility and elegance that rewards the table as much as the glass.

Winemaking Notes

Hand-harvested grapes were sorted before gently destemming into 2-tonne open fermenters and allowed to soak for 4–7 days prior to the onset of wild fermentation. 13% of the blend underwent carbonic maceration for 2 weeks before being destemmed and fermented on skins to dryness. Ferment temperatures peaked at 32°C, followed by a post-ferment maceration of 4–7 days before pressing. The wine was racked to French oak barriques (25% new) for natural malolactic fermentation and 11 months maturation. Harvest: late February through early March 2024. Alcohol: 13.5% ABV. Acidity: 6.30g/L. pH: 3.59. Cases produced: 1,325 dozen.

Vintage Conditions

The 2024 vintage on the Mornington Peninsula delivered the cool, maritime conditions that the region is celebrated for — a growing season of genuine character that concentrated flavour and preserved the natural acidity and structural elegance that defines great Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir. The late February through early March harvest timing reflects the careful, patient approach to viticulture that has made Montalto Estate one of the Peninsula’s most respected producers.
