Zema Estate Shiraz 2021 is a benchmark expression of Coonawarra’s celebrated terra rossa soils — hand-crafted by the Zema family, who have been producing exceptional estate-grown Coonawarra wines since 1982. Deep purple-red in the glass, with dusty, spicy, and leather notes combining with ripe plum and dried herbs on the nose, and a restrained, well-structured palate of ripe red fruits, soft tannins, and subtle oak. Full and round, with ripe red berries and soft, subtle tannins on the finish — a wine of outstanding depth and fruit that drinks beautifully now and offers excellent cellaring potential.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Deep purple-red — the concentrated, vibrant colour of a 100% Coonawarra Shiraz grown on the region’s renowned terra rossa soils, with the depth and intensity that the Zema family’s traditional hand-pruning and limited irrigation practices deliver.

Aroma

Dusty, spicy, and leather notes combine with ripe plum and dried herbs — a nose of genuine Coonawarra character and regional typicity, with the restrained, cool-climate elegance that defines the Zema Estate house style.

Palate

Restrained and well-structured — ripe red fruits, soft tannins, and subtle oak notes carry through a full, round palate filled with ripe red berries. The finish is soft and lingering, with the outstanding depth of fruit and excellent structure that reward both immediate drinking and extended cellaring.

Pairs With

Zema Estate Shiraz 2021 pairs beautifully with ossobuco alla Milanese or duck ragù served with pappardelle pasta — equally magnificent alongside slow-braised lamb, beef short rib, and aged hard cheeses.

Winemaking Notes

Fruit was harvested at optimum maturity and fermented on skins for 10 days under controlled temperatures, using a combination of static, pulse air, and rotary fermenters. Maturation for 15 months in French and American oak hogshead barrels has assisted in the development of a wine that shows vibrancy and richness. All Zema Estate wines are estate grown and vintaged — a commitment to quality and provenance that has defined the family’s approach since 1982. Winemaker Joe Cory.

Vintage Conditions

Coonawarra is renowned for its remarkable terra rossa soil — a thin one-metre band overlaying a deep formation of limestone that is ideally suited to producing Shiraz of exceptional concentration, structure, and regional typicity. The Zema family’s three strategically selected prime vineyard locations capitalise on the region’s subtle climatic variations, with traditional hand pruning and limited irrigation maximising fruit quality across all sites. The 2021 vintage delivered fruit of optimum maturity, with the vibrancy and richness that the Zema family’s meticulous vineyard management consistently achieves.
