Fantini Farnese Edizione Cinque Autoctoni is the Fantini Group’s flagship red — a deeply coloured, intense, and powerful blend of the most representative indigenous varieties of Abruzzo and Puglia: Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Primitivo, Negroamaro, and Malvasia Nera. Sourced from vineyards across Notaresco, Ortona, Sava, and Manduria, with Montepulciano and Sangiovese grown at 300 metres above sea level in the Abruzzi hills, and the remaining varieties from Southern Puglia, this is, in the words of its creator Valentino Sciotti, “a true taste of Southern Italy.” Classified as a Vino da Tavola, the 2023 vintage is a rich, powerful, and eminently drinkable expression of Southern Italian winemaking at its finest. Serve at 18°C.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Very deep garnet red — the striking, concentrated colour of a powerful blend of five indigenous Southern Italian varieties, with the depth and intensity that 25 days of maceration and 12 months in oak deliver.

Aroma

Very intense and persistent — cherry and blackcurrant lead, with herbs, cinnamon, cloves, cocoa, liquorice, and hints of mineral weaving through a complex, layered bouquet that is unmistakably Southern Italian in character.

Palate

Great structure and excellent balance between alcohol and freshness — velvety tannins carry the dark fruit and spice through to a very persistent, long finish. Rich and powerful, yet eminently drinkable now or built to age with distinction for years to come.

Pairs With

Fantini Farnese Edizione pairs beautifully with a charcuterie board, meatballs in tomato sauce, grilled meats, and important fish baked in the oven — a wine of genuine versatility and Southern Italian soul.

Winemaking Notes

Grapes are sourced from the communes of Colonnella, Ortona, Sava, and San Marzano across the Abruzzo and Puglia regions. Grapes were pressed and destemmed before maceration and fermentation lasting 25 days. Malolactic fermentation took place in new oak barriques — 60% American, 40% French. The varieties are then aged separately in American and French oak for 12 months before being blended just prior to bottling, creating a wine of rich complexity and seamless integration. Winemakers: Filippo Baccalaro and Dennis Verdecchia.

Vintage Conditions

The 2023 vintage across Abruzzo and Puglia delivered the warm Mediterranean conditions that these regions are celebrated for — ideal growing conditions for the five indigenous varieties that make up the Cinque Autoctoni blend. The Montepulciano and Sangiovese from the Abruzzi hills at 300 metres above sea level brought freshness and structure, while the Primitivo, Negroamaro, and Malvasia Nera from Southern Puglia contributed depth, richness, and the distinctive character of Italy’s deep south.
