Penfolds St Henri Shiraz is a time-honoured and alternative expression of Shiraz — an intriguing counterpoint to Grange, and proudly a wine style that has never succumbed to the dictates of fashion or commerce. Unusual amongst high-quality Australian reds, St Henri does not rely on any new oak, instead maturing for 14 months in large, seasoned oak vats that allow the wine to develop with minimal oak influence. First released in the early 1950s (first commercial vintage 1957), St Henri gained a new lease of life in the 1990s as its quality and distinctive style became better understood. The 2022 vintage is a classic expression — rich and plush in youth, with decades of cellaring potential ahead. A blend of 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Padthaway. Peak drinking now through to 2050.

Appearance

Saturated plum reds and violet — deep, vivid, and youthfully intense.

Aroma

Instantly recognisable as St Henri. The absence of new oak is a defining feature, and a gentle swirl brings forth a pure, joyous expression of Shiraz. Freeze-dried raspberries dusted over coconut sponge open the nose, followed by wild berry gelato, freshly roasted coffee beans, and cinnamon tea cake. With a little air, savoury notes emerge — carpaccio-like freshness with marinated olives, peppers, and brine.

Palate

Weighty yet buoyant, the palate has real presence and stature. Hazelnuts, macadamia, white chocolate, and Dutch liquorice vie for attention alongside a lovely fruit saturation reminiscent of Kir Royale, summer berry pudding, and melted chocolate. Ripe, fully integrated tannins effortlessly anchor the fruit. A classic St Henri that delivers in the full flush of youth but promises so much more for those inclined to cellar this wine for a few decades.

Pairs With

Roasted rack of lamb, beef tenderloin, duck with cherry jus, aged hard cheeses, and dark chocolate desserts. A wine of occasion, deserving of an unhurried evening.

Vintage Conditions

The 2022 growing season across Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Padthaway, and Coonawarra was shaped by moderate La Niña effects and a series of regional climatic variations, ultimately delivering fruit of outstanding quality. In the Barossa Valley, near-average winter rainfall and low soil moisture at the start of spring gave way to October heavy rains and isolated hail, before a dry December ushered in temperate summer conditions with minimal extreme heat — allowing grapes to ripen steadily with strong varietal markers. McLaren Vale saw temperatures rarely exceeding 35°C, creating an orderly harvest period ideally suited to Shiraz reaching optimal flavour and balance. Padthaway encountered an October frost but navigated the season without harsh heatwaves or rain-induced harvest delays. Coonawarra began with below-average rainfall before timely July showers and a wet October; frost risk was effectively managed with frost fans, and January warmth delivered excellent growing conditions, rapid and uniform veräison, and a harvest of high-quality Shiraz with natural balance from moderate crop sizes.
