Penfolds Grange 2000 is the millennial vintage of Australia’s most celebrated wine — a release that proved controversial at launch due to a challenging growing season, yet one that ultimately illustrates the extraordinary strength of Penfolds’ fruit sourcing and classification philosophy. Sourced exclusively from Kalimna Vineyard and the Barossa Valley, where crops were down 20–40% but parcels of true Grange quality were secured, the 2000 vintage is 100% Shiraz, matured for 18 months in new American oak hogsheads. Atypical rather than classic in the Grange canon, it nonetheless shows the resilience and character that defines this icon. As Chief Winemaker Peter Gago reflects: “Over two decades later we’re just so pleased.” Peak drinking now through to 2028 and beyond.

Appearance

Deep, bright red crimson with medium-deep intensity — still showing vitality and presence in the glass.

Aroma

At once a youthful Grange — smoky barrel-fermented notes hover above a complex base of black liquorice, tobacco, black pepper, exotic spices, and plummy, berried fruits. Fresh redcurrant, mocha, and tobacco leaf add further nuance and lift.

Palate

Mouthfilling, generous, and expansive, as expected of this marque. Dark chocolate and plum fruits court a deceptive play of substantial ripe tannins, delivering a powerful Grange stamp on the palate. Fine bittersweet tannins provide structure, whilst the wine retains its viscosity and mid-weight generosity. Still has considerable life ahead.

Pairs With

Roasted pheasant, aged prime beef, slow-roasted lamb, and the finest hard cheeses. A wine that rewards a considered and unhurried table.

“We had such lofty ambitions for the millennial vintage. Mother Nature aside, the Barossa Valley came to our rescue. Over two decades later we’re just so pleased.”
— Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker

Winemaking Notes

100% Shiraz sourced from Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley) and Barossa Valley. Matured for 18 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Alcohol: 14.0% | Acidity: 6.8 g/L | pH: 3.59. Last tasted September 2007. Winemaker comments by Peter Gago, Penfolds Chief Winemaker.

Vintage Conditions

The 2000 growing season presented significant challenges across most of south-eastern Australia. Rain fell between Christmas and New Year, followed by very dry and very hot conditions through to March — a combination that reduced crops by 20–40% across the regions. In the Barossa Valley, however, the conditions produced parcels of genuine Grange quality, and it is to the Barossa that this vintage owes its existence. The strength of Penfolds’ sourcing and fruit classification philosophy — the ability to identify and secure exceptional parcels even in the most difficult seasons — is nowhere better illustrated than in the 2000 Grange.

Producer History

Grange was first produced by Max Schubert in 1951 — an experimental wine initially rejected by Penfolds management and continued in secret before being reinstated for the 1960 vintage. From that moment, international acclaim followed without interruption. No other red wine in Australia can rival the reputation, consistent quality, or proven development pattern of Penfolds Grange. It is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia and the pinnacle of the Penfolds red wine range.
