Penfolds Grange 1995 marks the 45th consecutive vintage of the wine that carries the flag for the Australian wine industry both domestically and internationally. Created by the legendary late Max Schubert, Grange’s weight and concentration can be traced to the rigorous selection of intensely flavoured Shiraz grapes from mature vines in some of South Australia’s finest vineyards — Kalimna Vineyard in the Barossa Valley and the historic Magill Estate in Adelaide. A blend of Shiraz (94%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (6%), matured for 17 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads, the 1995 vintage exceeded expectations despite a challenging season. Now drinking at peak, with further development forecast through to 2035.

Appearance

Deep crimson with the intensity and depth characteristic of a mature Grange at its finest.

Aroma

Complex and concentrated — intense graphite, herb garden, mulberry, and blackberry fruits interweave with masses of plum and raspberry. Dark chocolate, mocha, liquorice, and spice add further layers of extraordinary aromatic depth. Hints of leather complete a bouquet of remarkable richness and precision.

Palate

Displaying all the classic hallmarks one would expect of Grange — full-bodied and richly flavoured, with ripe dark stewed fruits, mixed spices, and ample blackberry, mulberry, redcurrant, sage, and tobacco. Fine, plentiful, gritty muscular tannins provide structure, whilst mocha and dark chocolate oak notes are seamlessly and perfectly integrated. The finish is brambly and gravelly firm with attractive sweet fruit — generously concentrated with a beautifully balanced framework of oak and tannin.

Pairs With

Aged prime beef, slow-roasted lamb, game, and the finest hard cheeses. Decant well in advance to allow this wine to fully express its considerable depth.

Reviews

“Beautifully pitched red fruits, dry roasted spice, expensive leather and some warm earth. Perfectly integrated and proportioned tannins, acid and oak.”
— Nick Ryan, Australian Wine Writer

Vintage Conditions

Despite a difficult vintage across South Australia, the rigorous selection of intensely flavoured grapes from mature vines in some of the state’s finest vineyards produced a wine that exceeded vintage expectations — a testament to Penfolds’ multi-region, multi-vineyard blending philosophy, which enables the winemaking team to reduce the impact of vintage variation to the point where experts the world over consider Grange to be among the most consistent of the world’s great wines.

Producer History

Grange was first produced by Max Schubert in 1951 — an experimental wine initially rejected by Penfolds management and continued in secret before being reinstated for the 1960 vintage. From that moment, international acclaim followed without interruption. No other red wine in Australia can rival the reputation, consistent quality, or proven development pattern of Penfolds Grange. It is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia and the pinnacle of the Penfolds red wine range.
