Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz — affectionately known as ‘Baby Grange’ — is one of Australia’s most celebrated red wines, first made in 1960 by the legendary Max Schubert. Components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange, lending the wine an extraordinary pedigree. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (51%) and Shiraz (49%) sourced from McLaren Vale, Padthaway, and Barossa Valley, the 2023 vintage exemplifies the judicious balance of fruit and oak for which Bin 389 is renowned — generous on the mid-palate, structured for the long term, and built to reward patience. Peak drinking is forecast from now through to 2050. Cork enclosure.
Appearance
Plum red with a vivid crimson rim — youthful, vibrant, and deeply concentrated.
Aroma
The hallmark Bin 389 bouquet opens with blackberries and plums of considerable depth, complemented by shaved dark chocolate and Black Forest cake. Portuguese custard and cinnamon sugar bring sweetness, whilst pecan-infused hummingbird cake contrasts beautifully with savoury rosemary lamb. Dried herbs, a subtle hint of boot polish, and an umami soy sauce character add intrigue, with fine toasty oak discreetly folding into the fruit. Cured bresaola rounds out a complex and captivating aromatic profile.
Palate
A thoughtful and seamless blend. Cabernet Sauvignon provides impeccable structure and depth, whilst Shiraz adds weight and warmth. Vibrant red currant and tart cranberry flood the palate, threaded with vanilla sweetness and mouth-coating tannins of real richness. Black olive, orange zest, fennel, and olive add savoury complexity. The finish is long and commanding — fine, impeccable tannins leaving a lasting impression of both power and elegance.
Pairs With
Slow-roasted lamb, beef Wellington, duck confit, aged hard cheeses, and charcuterie. A wine that rewards a worthy occasion.

Vintage Conditions
The 2023 growing season across McLaren Vale, Padthaway, and Barossa Valley presented a series of climatic challenges that ultimately yielded fruit of exceptional quality. In McLaren Vale, persistent low-pressure systems through October and November brought wetter-than-average conditions, with cold and windy weather affecting flowering and fruit set, and isolated hail reducing yields. A warmer, drier summer rebalanced the vines, and a delayed but cool harvest delivered concentrated flavours and ripe tannins. Padthaway navigated above-average early rainfall before a drier July restored average soil moisture at budburst. Cooler spring temperatures slowed vine development, though no significant frosts occurred. A cooler December was briefly interrupted by a mid-level heatwave, before January returned to near long-term average temperatures. Vine development tracked a few weeks behind schedule, yet the harvest proceeded without major heat spikes, producing exceptional Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the Barossa Valley, near-average winter rainfall gave way to drier conditions at budburst, before heavy rains and flash floods in October and November delayed flowering and suppressed yields. Drier conditions later in the season and moderate harvest temperatures allowed for outstanding fruit development, with Shiraz ripening with exceptional varietal character and overall yields surpassing early expectations.
