Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz is one of Australia’s most enduring red wine icons, first made in 1959 and originally named after the famous Kalimna vineyard in the Barossa Valley. Today it is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend drawing on Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Padthaway — a showcase of warm climate Australian Shiraz at its most generous and expressive. The 2023 vintage eloquently expresses the Penfolds House Style, balancing fruit intensity with a structure poised for ageing. Peak drinking is forecast from now through to 2043.

Appearance

Deep purple core with a red rim, showing excellent depth and concentration.

Aroma

The bouquet is decadent and complex — baking spices of cinnamon sugar and sweet custard lead, followed by Chelsea tea cake warmth and a compote of red and black fruits. Skillet-roasted meat and herb-infused pan scrapings add savoury intrigue, with blueberry pie rounding out an unmistakably Penfolds aromatic profile.

Palate

Blue fruits take centre stage — elderberries, blueberries, and bilberries — merging with poached plums and the exotic spiciness of cassia bark. A hint of meat adds depth, whilst chocolate powder tannins provide a luxurious, sculpted mouthfeel that is both assertive and velvety. Umami complexity of tomato consommé and piquant olive tapenade add further dimension, underpinned by a ferrous minerality of real distinction.

Pairs With

Slow-roasted lamb, beef brisket, duck confit, aged hard cheeses, and charcuterie. A natural partner to a long, unhurried dinner.

Winemaking Notes

A blend of Shiraz sourced from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Padthaway, matured for 12 months in American oak hogsheads with 15% new oak. The wine was last tasted in March 2025. Alcohol: 14.5% | Acidity: 6.5 g/L | pH: 3.64.

Vintage Conditions

The 2023 growing season across Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Padthaway was defined by climatic challenge met with exceptional viticulture. In the Barossa, near-average winter rainfall gave way to a cooler spring punctuated by thunderstorms, delaying flowering and fruit set. Conditions improved markedly through summer, and a moderate harvest delivered later-than-usual Shiraz of outstanding quality — the extra hang time encouraging distinctive varietal character. McLaren Vale experienced significant spring rainfall and cooler temperatures that reduced yields, yet a warmer, drier summer allowed recovery, producing Shiraz of concentrated flavour and ripe tannins. Padthaway similarly navigated above-average rainfall and a delayed season, ultimately delivering exceptional fruit harvested in an orderly fashion. Across all regions, the dedication of Penfolds’ vineyard teams and growers proved decisive, with the results speaking eloquently for themselves.
