Shiraz Grenache Blends — Australia's Great Rhône Tradition

The Shiraz-Grenache blend — and its extended form, the Shiraz-Grenache-Mataro (SGM) or Grenache-Shiraz-Mataro (GSM) — is one of Australia's most celebrated and distinctive wine styles, rooted in the great red wine tradition of France's Southern Rhône Valley and the Languedoc, and brought to extraordinary expression in the warm, sun-drenched vineyards of South Australia's McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley. These are wines of generous fruit, natural warmth, and the kind of food-friendly, approachable character that makes them among the most enjoyable and versatile red wines produced in Australia.

The Rhône Heritage

The Shiraz-Grenache blend has its origins in the Southern Rhône Valley of France — the home of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, and the great red wines of Provence — where Grenache, Syrah (Shiraz), and Mourvèdre (Mataro) have been blended together for centuries to produce wines of extraordinary complexity, warmth, and Mediterranean character. The three varieties are natural partners: Grenache provides the generous red fruit, the natural warmth, and the approachable, supple texture that makes these blends so immediately enjoyable; Shiraz adds structure, depth, dark fruit intensity, and the spicy, peppery complexity that gives the blend its backbone; and Mataro (Mourvèdre) contributes earthy, savoury, and meaty complexity that adds depth and longevity to the blend.

The varieties were brought to South Australia by European settlers in the 19th century, and they found in the warm, Mediterranean-climate vineyards of McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley a terroir that was ideally suited to their character — producing wines of even greater generosity, warmth, and fruit intensity than their French counterparts, while retaining the natural acidity and structural complexity that allow the best examples to age magnificently.

The Styles: SG, SGM & GSM

The Shiraz-Grenache blend category encompasses a range of styles and blend compositions, each with its own distinctive character:

Shiraz Grenache (SG) — The two-variety blend, typically dominated by Shiraz for structure and dark fruit intensity, with Grenache providing the generous red fruit and supple texture. The classic approachable style — d'Arenberg's d'Arry's Original (50/50 Shiraz/Grenache) and Glaetzer's Wallace (75% Shiraz/25% Grenache) are outstanding examples of the style at different points on the Shiraz-to-Grenache spectrum.

Shiraz Grenache Mataro (SGM) / Grenache Shiraz Mataro (GSM) — The three-variety blend, adding Mataro's earthy, savoury complexity to the Shiraz-Grenache foundation. The order of the varieties in the name typically reflects their proportion in the blend — a GSM is Grenache-dominant, while an SGM is Shiraz-dominant. Henschke's Henry's Seven (76% Shiraz, 16% Grenache, 7% Mataro, 1% Viognier) and Rusden's Driftsand are outstanding examples of the three-variety style.
