Vintage Conditions

The 2023 Barossa Valley vintage delivered exceptional conditions for Grenache and Shiraz, with warm days and cool nights allowing the heritage bush vines to develop concentrated flavours whilst retaining natural acidity and freshness. The growing season was characterised by moderate temperatures and well-timed rainfall, ensuring the old vines produced fruit of remarkable intensity and balance. Careful vineyard management and selective hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness captured the vibrant red fruit character, spice complexity and silky tannin structure that define this outstanding vintage, showcasing the Barossa at its finest.

Winemaking

Rusden Driftsand is crafted from heritage Grenache and Shiraz vines with a remarkable history. In the 1970s, 80-year-old bush vines were cleared for mechanised production and replanted with high-yielding white varieties for the bulk market. Twenty years later, the Canute family spent months on their knees grafting these vines back to their original varieties, honouring the German pioneers who first planted them. Whilst Grenache was traditionally used for fortified wines, it now forms the foundation of this age-old blend. Gentle winemaking techniques preserve the fruit purity and silky texture, with careful fermentation and maturation allowing the wine's natural elegance and spice complexity to shine through, creating an outstanding example of Barossa Valley craftsmanship.
