Torbreck The Factor Shiraz 2023 pays homage to the Barossa’s unique point of difference — the great old Shiraz vineyards of the Western Ridge and the growers who painstakingly tend and nurture them each year. Many of these vineyards were planted in the 19th century and, thanks to South Australia’s far-sighted quarantine policy, survived the phylloxera outbreak of the 1880s on their own roots — clonal time capsules of extraordinary age and character. Hand-harvested, fermented in traditional open-top fermenters with extended skin contact, basket-pressed, and matured for 24 months in new and seasoned French oak barriques before bottling unfined and unfiltered. Satsuma plum, blackberry compote, dark cocoa, and Barossa Ironstone — a wine of voluptuous texture, epic presence, and 20+ year cellaring potential. Rated 19.5/20 by Matthew Jukes. Enjoy from 2026–2045.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Deep, inky ruby-red with a dense, concentrated core — the powerful, brooding colour of an old vine Barossa Valley Shiraz from the Western Ridge, with the depth and intensity that 24 months of French oak maturation and unfined, unfiltered bottling deliver.

Aroma

Very expressive and lifted — satsuma plum, blackberry compote, maraschino cherry, and vanilla bean lead, with dark cocoa, black tea, and espresso grounds adding complexity and depth. Barossa Ironstone, dried earth, and eucalypt provide a compelling mineral dimension. Complex, luxuriously dense, and alluring.

Palate

Voluptuous texture envelops the mouth with soft yet dense tannins and mouth-filling viscosity — flavours linger with extraordinary length and depth, with cleansing acidity polishing the finish. Oak maturation is harmonious and well-integrated, adding complexity without dominating. A modern Barossa classic built for 20+ years in the cellar. Enjoy from 2026–2045.

Pairs With

Torbreck The Factor Shiraz 2023 demands the finest table — slow-roasted lamb, aged beef, venison, wild game, and aged hard cheeses. A wine of rare distinction and epic presence, equally rewarding as a contemplative glass on its own.

Reviews

Matthew Jukes — 19.5/20
“The Factor commands respect, and with two years in 40% new French barriques, this is the super-posh wine in the Torbreck armoury. In 2023, the fruit is astonishingly luxurious, and it appears on the palate silently like a massive, black, stealthy and relentless submarine. Nautilus-like with extraordinary texture, acres of cacao and crates of spices and peppers, there is even a twist of Turkish bazaar here, which lightens the menacing mood. This is yet another staggeringly complete wine, with epic presence in the glass.”

Winemaking Notes

The Factor is sourced from select old vine Shiraz vineyards along the Barossa Valley’s Western Ridge — many planted in the 19th century and surviving on their own roots as clonal time capsules. Fruit is hand-harvested and fermented in traditional open-top fermenters with extended skin contact to develop depth and tannin structure. Following basket pressing, the wine is matured for 24 months in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barriques (40% new). Bottled unfined and unfiltered to capture the bold, brooding character of Barossa Shiraz with remarkable balance and longevity.

Vintage Conditions

The 2023 growing season brought above-average rainfall in winter and spring and a cooler summer, with most vineyards not harvested until April — approximately one month later than usual. Through dedicated viticulture practices including hand pruning, hand harvesting, and careful soil management, the vintage resulted in low-yielding, resilient fruit of exceptional quality. The 2023 vintage has produced very strong wines from the Eden and Barossa Valleys, with bright colours, freshness, and higher natural acidities auguring greater longevity and detail across the palate.
