Winery & Vintage Info

At Gemtree, the estate vineyards are farmed organically and biodynamically — a philosophy that rewards with fruit of exceptional flavour and purity. The Obsidian is hand crafted from 1 hectare of a 120-hectare estate, sourced from vines aged 25 to 30 years grown across two distinct geological formations: Kurrajong clayey sand and silica-cemented conglomerate, and Piedmonte red-brown to chocolate-brown clay and loams at 150–180 metres altitude.

The result is a Shiraz of genuine varietal purity — an elegant and polished wine where the oak regime is judicious, the provenance is clear, and the depth rewards patience. The Obsidian is impeccably integrated and balanced, built for mid- to long-term cellaring.

Vinification
All fruit is 100% hand harvested then destemmed. Whole berries are fermented on skins for seven days between 22–24°C with gentle cap management to extract pure fruit characters and tannins. Post-fermentation, skins are hand dug from the fermenter; free run and pressings are separated before going straight to oak for maturation, racked and returned once only. Individual barrels are tasted before blending — only those that truly demonstrate style and quality are selected.

Maturation: 90% new French oak, 10% 1 year old French oak.
