Tasting Notes

Appearance

Bright medium ruby red with brilliant clarity, showcasing the wine's quality and vibrancy characteristic of this exceptional 2022 cool-climate Adelaide Hills Shiraz from low yielding vines in Balhannah and the central Adelaide Hills.

Aroma

The nose opens with an expectation: game meat, white pepper, raspberry, tart cherry, some dried herbs and a whiff of truffle. Savouriness and pretty fruit hand in hand, creating a sophisticated aromatic profile that reflects the cool La Niña season.

Palate

It delivers on the palate, satiny tannins wrap up more of those fruit and savoury elements, game meat and pepper a strong card but beautifully woven through red fruits and sweeter spices. Ribbons of those tannins trail long through the palate; a light dusting of spice lingers. It's spot-on medium weight, too. So much charm. A combination of red and blue fruits, a touch of white pepper and good grippy tannins framing the mid-weight palate. This Shiraz delivers brightness and vibrancy with ripe fruit and structure that makes it very complete and delicious cool-climate Shiraz.

Pairs With

This delightful medium-bodied cool-climate Shiraz pairs beautifully with game meats, roast lamb, duck, venison, mushroom dishes or aged cheeses, with the wine's satiny tannins, game meat and white pepper making it an excellent choice for sophisticated dining and special occasions.

Winemaking Notes

Shaw + Smith Shiraz is a medium-bodied cool-climate Shiraz, in which balance is more important than power. A wine with freshness and lift, and some luscious fruit as well. From low yielding vines in Balhannah and the central Adelaide Hills, the grapes were small, packed with flavour and with higher than normal acidity. Aged for 10 months in 500 to 600 litre French oak barrels, 20% new, followed by a further 16 months in bottle. There's a combination of red and blue fruits, a touch of white pepper and good grippy tannins framing the mid-weight palate. From a cool La Niña season, this Shiraz delivers brightness and vibrancy with ripe fruit and structure that makes it very complete and delicious cool-climate Shiraz. The 2022 vintage features a delightful aroma and a succulent taste, accentuated by vibrant raspberry and boysenberry flavours and refined tannins. Winery Notes.

Vintage Conditions

The vintage threw up a number of challenges but the weather during the ripening period was extremely kind. February saw perfectly even ripening and resulted in grapes that were small, packed with flavour and with higher than normal acidity. From a cool La Niña season, the 2022 vintage delivered brightness and vibrancy with ripe fruit and structure. The perfectly even ripening in February allowed the grapes from low yielding vines in Balhannah and the central Adelaide Hills to develop optimal flavour concentration whilst maintaining natural acidity and freshness. These favourable ripening conditions resulted in a wine with game meat, white pepper, raspberry, tart cherry, dried herbs and truffle aromas, satiny tannins and a combination of red and blue fruits. The cool-climate conditions created a medium-bodied Shiraz with spot-on weight, charm and the balance that defines Shaw + Smith's winemaking philosophy where balance is more important than power.
