Remus is Sons of Eden's benchmark old-vine Eden Valley Shiraz, assembled exclusively from vineyards more than 50 years old across three distinct Eden Valley sites. The 2023 vintage is a standout — low yields from these ancient vines produced wines of concentration, vibrancy and genuine ageing potential. Remus 2023 is built to last, with an optimum drinking window centred on 2036.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep, dense ruby with violet hues, consistent with the concentration of old-vine Shiraz at low yields.
Nose: Dense and plush wild berry fruit aromatics with hints of sage and mocha.
Palate: Complex blackberry fruit drives the palate with seamless velvety tannins. Concentrated but refined and elegant, characteristic of old-vine Eden Valley Shiraz.
Finish: The palate's refinement and structural tension suggest a long, measured finish with persistent fruit and gentle oak integration.
Winemaking
Fruit was hand harvested from three Eden Valley sites — Central Eden Valley (80+ years), Flaxmans Valley (80+ years) and Moculta (60+ years) — across late April and early May 2023. All vineyards must exceed 50 years of age to qualify for the Remus selection. Grapes were destemmed and crushed into small 1.5-tonne open-top fermenters, with selected fermenters receiving up to 15% whole-bunch clusters added to the destemmed berries. A pre-fermentation cold soak preceded fermentation, which was allowed to peak at 27°C before being cooled to 20°C for the remainder of its course. Daily hand plunging ensured gentle extraction over an extended period on skins. The wine was then pressed to 60% new French oak hogsheads, where it matured for 18 months without racking.
