Plantagenet York Chardonnay 2022 vintage is a 100% Chardonnay blend, with a very pale straw luminous green hue to it. A lifted, punchy style of chardonnay that displays pristine, fresh aromatics of ripe melon and grapefruit. Seamlessly integrated French Oak nuttiness that helps promote the fruit rather than dominate. The palate is tight and focused on a natural mineral acid core with a creamy textured mid-palate and long, long finish.

Winery & Vintage Info

Plantagenet is a pioneer of the Great Southern region of Western Australia with vineyards first planted in 1968 and the first commercial winery established in the region in 1975. Estate vineyards in the Mount Barker sub region, including the flagship ‘Wyjup’ vineyard, provides access to sites with unique characteristics, ancient soils and a cool maritime climate favouring the production of low yield high quality parcels of fruit.

Owned by vignerons Tom & Jo Wisdom, the attention to detail in the vineyard and a focus on nurturing traditional old vine blocks ensures that expressive cool climate wines are crafted of provenance, quality, and prestige. A consistent Five Red Star winery rating in the Halliday Wine Companion attests to the long-term focus on quality.

The fruit for the 2022 Plantagenet York Chardonnay saw a combination of handpicked - whole bunch and machine harvested fruit. Pressed tank then racked to French oak barriques (~30% new) with a high degree of solids. Combination of wild and inoculated fermentation held below 20°C. Malolactic ferment not encouraged. Lees stirred weekly initially and reduced to monthly towards the end of maturation. Racked to final blend, light fining, stabilisation, filtration, and bottling.
