Best's Foudre Ferment Riesling 2024 from the Grampians region is an exceptional expression of Australian Riesling, showcasing vibrant fruit character and remarkable ageing potential through to 2034.

Appearance

Pale straw in colour with attractive yellow and gold hues, this Riesling displays brilliant clarity and a luminous quality that hints at the wine's purity and precision.

Aroma

An exceptional bouquet greets the nose with delicate white petals and floral notes, complemented by freshly cut hay and luscious yellow stone fruits. The aromatic profile is wonderfully expressive, with white jasmine and honeysuckle adding layers of complexity to this captivating wine.

Palate

Vibrant and refreshing, the palate bursts with yellow stone fruits of peach and apricot, beautifully interwoven with white jasmine and honeysuckle florals. Citrus drives the wine with preserved lemon, limoncello, and lime rind creating a zesty backbone. Good phenolics and crisp acidity keep this Riesling light, fresh, and perfectly balanced. Whilst best appreciated in the short to medium term for its aromatic intensity, this wine will develop complexity over 7-10 years.

Pairs With

Perfect with classic fish and chips, yabbies in garlic butter, pan-fried halloumi with grilled nectarines, fresh seafood, Asian cuisine, or creamy goat's cheese.

Winery & Vintage Info

This wine is the successor of the very well received 2012 EVT 51. The 2012 was the inaugural wine of this style from Best’s, but it is reflective of the way Riesling was made here in the 1970s and earlier.

The aromatic Riesling juice is given extended skin contact then wild fermented in a large oak Foudre (barrel), made by the Schneckenleitner family in Austria. The wine exhibits both the complexities of a barrel ferment and spontaneous fermentation without the overt oak flavour, due to the large size and subtlety of the Foudre.

The Foudre Ferment style represents another facet of Rieslings charm produced here in Great Western.

Vintage 2024 began with a very wet spring. Rain and cool temperatures were the theme up until Christmas. The rain slowed down in January and was followed by very warm weather across February. The warmer end to vintage promoted intense stone fruit characters in the finished wine. The Riesling yields for 2024 were outstanding across the Great Western region.
