The 2018 Plantagenet Three Lions Shiraz has lifted aromatics of mulberry and violet floral anise, black pepper and iodine. The palate is firm even tannins, plush and dense with blue fruits, plum, spicy charred oak, cardamom, nutmeg and a subtle savouriness. Good fresh acid gives a brooding lingering finish.

92 points (+ Top Value) - "Lifted spice and blue fruit aromas, there's some dried herb action as well. Bright and youthful flavours of blueberries and spice, it's a mid-weighted wine driven by a core of pure fruit and balanced out very nicely with firm tannins and a decent drive of acid." - Aaron Brasher, The Real Review

Silver Medal -  "Dark crimson. Deep mulberry fruit with cinnamon spice. Palate rich and concentrated with firm, grippy tannins." - 2021 International Wine Challenge

92 points - "This is sweetly ripe and elegantly perfumed, showing Black Doris plum, clove, vanilla and roasted nut aromas on the nose, followed by a flavoursome palate displaying fleshy texture and silky tannins. At its best: now to 2028." - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, April 2021.

91 points - Ray Jordan, WA Wine Guide 2022

91 points - "A fresh and complex shiraz, this has a handy depth of summer berries on the nose with plenty of spicy allure, too. The palate is evenly cast and delivers a wealth of ripe red and dark-berry flavour." - Nick Stock, JamesSuckling.com, 2021

Winery & Vintage Info

Plantagenet’s vineyard estate has been carved out of the Great Southern's distinctive Marri Soils named after the massive native Marri, or Red Gum trees that grow there.

The soils are ironstone gravelly sandy loams over a base of clay or ironstone rock. The vineyard block sites were selected where good water drainage allows control over vine vigour, one of the most important determinants of fruit quality.

2018 saw typical cool climate conditions prevail throughout the vintage, with steady even temperatures, no significant spikes or drops in temperature with bright and clear days. Cool clear nights and crisp dewy mornings maintained acid levels and enhanced the fruit aromatics. The wines show good intensity of flavour with good levels of acidity balancing the punchy fruit flavours across the spectrum. A long cool ripening period with little weather pressure crafted a good vintage across the varietals.

Fruit for the 2018 Three Lions Shiraz was machine harvested, de-stemmed and crushed, fermented in closed fermenters, pump overs twice daily, pressed to tank for MLF, matured in a combination of oak barriques and stainless steel tank, racked and returned together, matured for 18 months before being blended, filtered, fined and bottled.
