Pizzini Pietra Rossa Sangiovese 2024 is a 100% Sangiovese from Pizzini’s finest King Valley vineyard sites — the Hut block, Brunello block, and Chestnut block — grown in the iron oxide-rich, rocky soils that give this wine its name. Pietra Rossa: Red Stone. Brick red with a cherry hue, sweet ripe plums and red berries on the nose opening to spicy and earthy characters, and a rich, seductive palate of plums, cherries, and savoury tannins with the balance to drink now or cellar with confidence.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Brick red with a cherry hue — the classic, inviting colour of a King Valley Sangiovese from iron oxide-rich, rocky soils, fermented at 30°C with BM45 yeast for maximum colour, flavour, and tannin extraction.

Aroma

Initial notes of sweet ripe plums and red berries lead the nose, opening to spicy and earthy characters as the wine breathes. The expressive, layered bouquet of a Sangiovese grown in the Pietra Rossa soils of the King Valley — red stone, red fruit, and the savoury complexity that this variety delivers at its finest.

Palate

Rich and seductive — plums, cherries, and hints of leather with soft earthy notes, balanced by fresh acidity and savoury tannins. The balance of fruit and acidity gives this wine both immediate drinking pleasure and genuine ageing potential.

Pairs With

A natural partner for pasta, slow-cooked lamb, osso buco, pizza, aged hard cheeses, and traditional Italian cuisine — the plum and cherry fruit, savoury tannins, and earthy complexity make Pizzini Pietra Rossa Sangiovese a deeply satisfying and versatile companion for the table.

Winemaking Notes

100% Sangiovese from the Hut block G2, Brunello block D6, and Chestnut block D5 — machine picked and fermented with BM45 yeast, made famous in Tuscany for producing great Brunello wines. Fermentation temperatures reach and are maintained at 30°C for approximately three weeks, extracting maximum colour, flavour, and tannin whilst softening the tannins through polymerisation. The best free-run wine is drained after alcoholic fermentation and transferred to barrel for malolactic fermentation and 14 months maturation in 100% old French oak ranging from 225L to 5000L. Blended, fined, filtered, and bottled August 2025. 13.5% ABV. pH: 3.56. TA: 5.75 g/L.

Vintage Conditions

The 2024 season in the King Valley commenced wet and cold before conditions changed dramatically — consistent rain gave way to warm, dry weather and a perfect summer for grape growing. Morning temperatures around 15°C by 9am and daily peaks of 30°C by 3pm created ideal conditions for producing wines of both immediate appeal and long-term ageing potential. One of the most promising vintages in recent memory.

Producer History

For generations, Pizzini have been experimenting with and perfecting diverse and innovative Italian varieties in the King Valley — a region of abundant beauty, cool climate, and fertile soils that is the perfect home for nuanced and characterful Italian varieties. Pietra Rossa — Red Stone — takes its name from the iron oxide-rich, rocky soils of the estate’s finest Sangiovese vineyard sites, where diversity of expression, purity of fruit, and the gently undulating slopes of the King Valley combine to produce a Sangiovese of genuine depth and distinction. Diversity. Expression. Purity. Since the Pizzini family first planted in the King Valley.
