Neldner Road Barossa Valley Shiraz is crafted with a clear and compelling intention — to benchmark Western Barossa Shiraz at its finest whilst remaining at a very accessible price point. Sourced from mature Barossa Valley vineyards of 30 years and older, with the majority located along the region’s North-Western ridge in Marananga and Seppeltsfield, this is a wine of genuine provenance and character. Grape parcels are vinified separately in concrete vats, basket pressed, and assembled into large format 4,500 litre French oak foudres for 18 months maturation — a winemaking approach that prioritises fruit purity and textural finesse above all else.

Appearance

Deep, inky purple with excellent concentration — a hallmark of mature Barossa vine fruit.

Aroma

Abundant aromas of dark plum and blackberry lead the bouquet, layered with nuances of tar, graphite, and delicate dried herbs and tobacco. Complex, earthy, and unmistakably Western Barossa in character.

Palate

Velvety in texture with intense dark fruit flavours and well-integrated tannins. Subtle notes of coffee and cedar add richness and depth, whilst the finish is powerful and lingering — dark fruit persisting alongside a compelling hint of white pepper spice.

Pairs With

Slow-braised beef short ribs, roasted lamb, aged hard cheeses, and charcuterie. A wine that punches well above its price point at the table.

Winemaking Notes

Sourced from mature Barossa Valley vineyards (30+ years old), predominantly from Marananga and Seppeltsfield along the North-Western ridge. Grape parcels are vinified separately in concrete vats before being basket pressed and assembled into large format 4,500 litre French oak foudres for 18 months maturation. Alcohol: 14.5%.

Vintage Conditions

The 2023 Barossa Valley vintage was one of the most challenging and remarkable in recent memory, arriving three to four weeks later than the region’s established norm. Driven by a combination of Negative IOD and La Niña climatic patterns, spring rainfall was one of the wettest on record — running 131% above the long-term average across 53 rain days. Strong budburst and healthy soil moisture set the season in motion, though persistent winter rain created Downy Mildew pressure that demanded diligent canopy and spray management. Summer was measured and benign, with no heatwaves and just 43mm of rainfall keeping conditions stable through veräison. Harvest for Shiraz, typically mid-February, did not begin until early to mid-March. The patience required paid handsome dividends — reds from the 2023 vintage display intense, rich, and beautifully balanced flavours and colour, a direct reflection of the hard work invested across a long and demanding growing season.
