Louis Roederer Vintage Champagne 2016 is a singular expression of the Verzy Pinot Noirs from La Montagne — the first vineyards purchased by Louis Roederer in the mid-19th century. Composed of 68% Pinot Noir and 32% Chardonnay, the 2016 vintage was shaped by cool, wet spring conditions followed by a warm, dry summer and a late-August heatwave. Wine Sellers Direct Verdict
Louis Roederer Vintage 2016 occupies a distinctive position in the Louis Roederer portfolio — a vintage Champagne built around the house’s oldest estate Pinot Noir vineyards, expressing the singular character of La Montagne in an exceptional year. The 2016 vintage delivered Pinot Noir of unusual intensity and silky texture, giving this wine a richness and depth that sets it apart from the Collection NV releases. At its core, this is a Champagne for buyers who value terroir expression, vintage character and the prestige of a true vintage release over the consistency of a non-vintage blend. Gift boxed and built for cellaring, it is one of the strongest prestige Champagne gift choices in the Louis Roederer range.
Vintage Assessment
The 2016 season was one of Champagne’s most contrasting recent vintages. A cool, wet spring reduced yields and delayed development before a warm, dry summer and late-August heatwave transformed conditions. The result was fruit of exceptional concentration and balance. In Louis Roederer Vintage 2016, this translates into intensely expressive Pinot Noir, silky texture, vibrant acidity and the structure required for long-term ageing. The vintage combines generosity with precision, making it one of the stronger recent releases in the Louis Roederer Vintage series.
Who Should Drink This?
Choose Louis Roederer Vintage 2016 if you: appreciate vintage Champagne with genuine terroir expression; favour Pinot Noir-dominant styles with silky texture and depth; are looking for a prestige Champagne gift; or want a serious cellaring proposition from one of Champagne’s most respected houses.
This wine may not suit you if you prefer: a lighter, fresher NV style — in which case Louis Roederer Collection 246 may be a stronger choice.
What’s Similar?
Louis Roederer Collection 246 NV
The house flagship non-vintage. Fresher, more saline and Chardonnay-driven than the Vintage 2016. Better suited to aperitif occasions and those who prefer a lighter, more precise style.

The 2016 vintage was characterised by particularly marked weather variations: spring was cool, wet and relatively late whereas summer was warm and dry with a heatwave in late August followed by dry and sunny weather over the harvest period which was highly beneficial to the ripening of the grapes. Our Pinot noirs thrived in these dry, sunny conditions and the heat has given them an intensely fruity character and silky smooth texture. The Chardonnays are just as outstanding although more chiselled and saline in character. Harvests from 15 September to 1 October 2016.
