Louis Roederer — Champagne
Louis Roederer is one of Champagne's most respected and enduring houses, founded in 1776 and still independently owned by the Roederer family. In a region dominated by large luxury conglomerates, Louis Roederer's independence is significant — it allows the house to prioritise quality over volume, maintain long-term vineyard investment, and preserve the traditional methods that have defined its style for nearly 250 years.
The house owns over 240 hectares of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards across Champagne, giving it an unusually high degree of control over its fruit sources. This estate ownership is central to the consistency and character of every wine in the range, from the non-vintage Collection to the legendary Cristal.
Why Louis Roederer Matters
Louis Roederer occupies a rare position in Champagne — a house of genuine prestige that has remained independent while its peers were absorbed into luxury groups. That independence has allowed it to make long-term decisions about viticulture, winemaking and style that would be difficult under corporate ownership. The result is a range of Champagnes with a consistent and recognisable house character: precise, mineral-driven, and built for longevity. Cristal, the house's prestige cuvée, is one of the most historically significant and collectible Champagnes in the world.
The Range
Collection 245 Brut — The house's non-vintage Champagne, blended from multiple vintages to achieve consistency and house style. The number in the name refers to the blend number, reflecting Louis Roederer's approach of treating each non-vintage release as a distinct, evolving expression rather than a fixed formula. Fine bubbles, elegant fruit and a refined mineral finish.
Vintage — Produced only in exceptional years, Louis Roederer Vintage Champagne expresses the character of a single harvest. Greater depth, complexity and ageing potential than the non-vintage, with the structure to develop over a decade or more in the cellar.
Cristal — The prestige cuvée and one of the world's most celebrated Champagnes. Created in 1876 for Tsar Alexander II of Russia — making it the first prestige cuvée in Champagne history — Cristal is produced exclusively from Grand Cru vineyards and aged extensively before release. The iconic clear bottle, originally designed to prevent tampering, has become one of the most recognisable in the wine world. Cristal is a benchmark for what Champagne can achieve at its highest level.
Terroir & Winemaking
Louis Roederer's vineyards are concentrated in the Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs — the three principal subregions of Champagne. The chalky limestone soils provide the mineral tension and natural acidity that are hallmarks of the house style. The cool northern climate allows slow, even ripening, preserving freshness and complexity in the finished wines. The house uses traditional méthode champenoise throughout, with extended lees ageing that adds depth and autolytic complexity to every wine in the range.
Cellaring & Serving
Louis Roederer Collection 245 is enjoyable on release and over the following three to five years. Vintage releases benefit from five to fifteen years of cellaring, and Cristal is capable of developing for twenty to thirty years in the finest vintages. Serve at 8–10°C in a tulip glass or white wine glass. Cristal in particular benefits from a wider glass that allows its aromatic complexity to fully express.
Food Pairing
Louis Roederer Champagnes pair naturally with oysters, fine seafood, white fish, poultry and soft cheeses. Cristal, with its richness and depth, can accompany more substantial dishes including lobster, scallops and delicate white meat preparations.
