Tasting Notes

Appearance

This elegant Alsace blend presents a pale gold hue with brilliant clarity, displaying the pristine quality characteristic of premium hand-harvested grapes from the favoured clay and limestone vineyards around Riquewihr.

Aroma

The nose is suave and spicy, revealing inviting aromas of yellow plums and rose petals alongside quince and vibrant citrus zests. The Gewurztraminer brings exotic spice, Riesling contributes finesse, Muscat adds grapiness, whilst Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner provide complexity and freshness, creating a harmonious aromatic profile of remarkable depth.

Palate

Dry and gastronomic, the palate beautifully balances the suave, spicy flavour of Gewurztraminer with the body of Pinot Gris, the finesse of Riesling, the grapiness of Muscat, and the refreshing character of both Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner. The wine displays great finesse and unequalled drinkability, with excellent structure and a clean, persistent finish that showcases the cool, long growing season.

Winemaking Notes

Hugel Alsace Gentil 2023 is produced exclusively from hand-harvested grapes grown in predominantly clay and limestone vineyards, from a dozen of the most favoured localities in and around Riquewihr. The grapes are transported in small tubs to the presses, which are filled by gravity without any pumping or mechanical intervention. After pressing, the must is decanted for a few hours, then fermented in temperature-controlled vats at 18 to 24°C. The wine is racked just once before natural clarification during winter, then lightly filtered before bottling the following spring. Bottles are aged in Hugel's cellars until release, with the entire production sealed with DIAM cork, eliminating the risk of cork taint.

Vintage Conditions

The 2023 vintage in Alsace benefited from a cool and long growing season, allowing the six noble grape varieties to develop great finesse whilst retaining natural acidity and aromatic intensity. The clay and limestone terroir of Riquewihr's favoured localities provided ideal conditions for producing this unique dry wine with exceptional drinkability. This vintage continues Hugel's age-old tradition of blending noble Alsace varieties, creating a wine that perfectly embodies the elegance, harmony and gastronomic character that has made Gentil a benchmark for Alsace blends.
