Maxwell Ellen Street Shiraz 2023 is a powerful yet restrained McLaren Vale Shiraz from one of the estate’s most prized blocks — a small vineyard of craggy, gnarled Shiraz vines planted in 1953 along the southern boundary of the Maxwell estate. Deep purple with violet hues; rich mahogany, charry oak, cedar, sweet vanillin spice, and clove on the nose; oak playing a supporting role for a tightly wound core of dark fruit on the palate, with perfectly balanced acid and tannin carrying through to a long, sophisticated finish.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Deep purple with violet hues — the concentrated, intense colour of a 1953-planted McLaren Vale Shiraz of genuine estate distinction and old-vine character.

Aroma

Rich and complex — mahogany, charry oak, and cedar lead, with sweet vanillin spice and clove adding warmth and depth. The aromas flow seamlessly from nose to palate with the effortless continuity of a great McLaren Vale Shiraz.

Palate

Powerful yet restrained — oak plays a supporting role for a tightly wound core of dark fruit, with perfectly balanced acid and tannin carrying the fruit to a long, sophisticated finish. A Shiraz of genuine cellaring potential and old-vine concentration.

Pairs With

Maxwell Ellen Street Shiraz 2023 pairs beautifully with hoisin glazed duck, slow-roasted lamb, beef short ribs, hard aged cheeses, and rich game dishes — a powerful, sophisticated McLaren Vale Shiraz built for the table and the cellar.

Winery & Vintage Info

Winemaking Notes

Several Shiraz blocks from the Maxwell estate are individually harvested and vinified. Parcels are fermented with a large portion of whole berries to extract silky tannins and impart lifted aromatics, then aged 18 months in French and American oak. 100% McLaren Vale Shiraz. 14.5% ABV. Residual sugar: 2.463 g/L. TA: 6.2 g/L. pH: 3.45. Winemakers: Kate Petering and Mark Maxwell. Will mature for a further 10+ years if cellared correctly.

Vintage Conditions

The 2023 vintage was a challenging year in the vineyard — regular spring rain events caused increased disease pressure, though McLaren Vale’s coastal proximity and sea breezes reduced mildew outbreaks compared to other regions. A cool spring gave way to a mild summer and long ripening period, allowing fruit to reach optimum ripeness at lower alcohol levels. Vintage began 2–3 weeks later than average, with below-average yields. The slow ripening and cool temperatures delivered perfect natural acidity and fantastic colour in the reds.
