d’Arenberg The Love Grass Shiraz 2021 takes its name from the weed that grows in the d’Arenberg vineyards — its sticky flowers attaching themselves affectionately to vineyard workers’ socks. This Shiraz will linger with you in exactly the same way. A deeply aromatic, fruit-driven McLaren Vale Shiraz of genuine complexity and character, blending Shiraz (85%) with other varieties (14%), foot trodden, basket pressed, and aged in French oak for 18 months. 14.5% ABV.

Appearance

Deep, dark red — the rich, concentrated colour of a McLaren Vale Shiraz of real intensity and depth.

Aroma

Very aromatic and expressive — this wine reveals its full character after some time to breathe. Deep and intense red and dark fruits lead: boysenberry and mulberry are highly prominent, complemented by ripe plum and bramble. Hints of anise and vanilla add delightful complexity to a bouquet of genuine McLaren Vale depth and character.

Palate

Rich and concentrated, with the boysenberry, mulberry, and plum fruit of the nose carrying through to a palate of real depth and persistence. Firm, grippy tannins are quite prominent in this youthful wine — a sign of genuine structure and cellaring potential. Extended cellaring will beautifully soften the tannins and reveal further layers of complexity.

Finish

Long and lingering — the anise and vanilla notes persisting alongside the dark fruit in a finish that, much like the lovegrass flowers, refuses to let go.

Pairs With

Slow-braised lamb shoulder, beef short ribs, duck confit, aged hard cheeses, and rich game dishes. A wine built for the table and the cellar in equal measure.

Winemaking Notes

Small batches of grapes are gently crushed and transferred to open fermenters. Foot treading is undertaken two-thirds of the way through fermentation — a traditional technique that extracts colour, tannin, and complexity with a gentleness that mechanical methods cannot replicate. The wine is then basket pressed and aged in French oak for up to 18 months. Chief Winemaker: Chester Osborn. Senior Winemaker: Jack Walton. Harvest dates: 22 February – 13 April. Alcohol: 14.5% ABV. Residual sugar: 1.2 g/L. pH: 3.44. Titratable acidity: 6.8 g/L.

Vintage Conditions

The 2021 McLaren Vale vintage began with a beautifully wet winter that flushed the soil of salts and filled the soil profile, followed by an above-average spring with rainfall through to November. November was hotter than normal, which disrupted berry set — fortunate, given that bunch numbers were well up. Two inches of rain in early February was much appreciated by the relatively large crops. The heat produced a fast flowering, rapid berry development, and an early veraison, leading to the equal earliest start of vintage on record. A few days around 35°C in February rapidly ripened the early, lower-cropping vineyards, before the vintage settled into a mild and dry rhythm. Average autumn temperatures were down, with some welcome 30°C days in late March and early April helping to finish the ripening of larger crops and late-ripening varieties.
