Pertaringa Over the Top Shiraz 2024 is named to proudly declare its aim — to make the finest Shiraz that McLaren Vale’s very best sites, climate, vines, and production techniques can possibly produce. Sourced from two exceptional Blewitt Springs vineyards with deep Holocene-era soils and a combined heritage stretching back to the very origins of McLaren Vale viticulture, crafted in small batch open fermenters for 9 days on skins, pressed directly to oak for MLF, and matured for 15 months in French oak puncheons and hogsheads with no fining and minimal filtration. Elegant and complex on the nose — cherries, plums, pepper, cloves, and toasty oak; rich and concentrated on the palate — raspberries, cherries, liquorice root, and spice with well-integrated oak and velvety tannins; and a long, satisfying finish. Drink now to 2034. Over the top, in every sense.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Deep, vibrant ruby — the rich, concentrated colour of a McLaren Vale Shiraz sourced from two exceptional Blewitt Springs vineyards with Holocene-era soils and vines with deep roots in the history of the region.

Aroma

Elegant and complex — cherries and plums with spicy notes of pepper and cloves, complemented by toasty oak from 15 months in French oak puncheons and hogsheads. The distinctive, expressive, and beautifully layered bouquet of a McLaren Vale Shiraz crafted to the highest possible standard.

Palate

Rich and concentrated — raspberries, cherries, liquorice root, and spice with well-integrated oak, followed by velvety tannins and a long, satisfying finish. The depth, complexity, and structure of a Shiraz made from two of Blewitt Springs’ finest sites, with no fining and minimal filtration to preserve every nuance of flavour.

Pairs With

A natural companion for slow-roasted lamb, grilled beef, duck confit, aged hard cheeses, and the finest McLaren Vale table — Pertaringa Over the Top Shiraz is equally rewarding now and will develop extraordinary complexity with cellaring.

Winemaking Notes

Sourced from two vineyards in Blewitt Springs: Osmond’s Penny’s Block, harvested 4 March 2024, with deep Holocene alluvial clay soils from one of the first areas planted in McLaren Vale; and Warraminga Park, harvested 6 March 2024, with sandy loam soils and vines planted in 1960 from Upper Tintara ancestry — one of the higher and cooler areas of McLaren Vale, situated next door to the first vineyard Thomas Hardy owned in the region. Both parcels were kept separate and made in small batch open fermenters for 9 days on skins, pressed directly to oak for completion of MLF, followed by maturation for 15 months in both new and aged French oak puncheons and hogsheads. No fining. Minimal filtration. Alc: 14.5%. TA: 6.56g/L. pH: 3.6. RS: 0.9g/L.

Producer History

Pertaringa is the McLaren Vale label of Bec Hardy — one of Australia’s most celebrated winemaking families, with a heritage in McLaren Vale stretching back to Thomas Hardy himself, who planted the Upper Tintara Vineyard that gave rise to the Warraminga Park vines used in this very wine. Over the Top is the pinnacle of the Pertaringa range — a wine that acknowledges the very best site, climate, vines, and production techniques available, and sets out to make the finest Shiraz that McLaren Vale can produce. Thomas Hardy’s legacy. Bec Hardy’s vision. Over the top, in every sense.
