Winemaking Notes

Wolf Blass Grey Label McLaren Vale Shiraz 2022 was crafted by winemaker Alex MacKenzie β€” with over fifteen years of winemaking experience and a philosophy of allowing the season and dirt to speak for themselves, keeping winemaking simple to enable a pure expression of fruit. Individual vineyard batches were fermented in small open-top fermenters for 5–10 days, with plunging and gentle irrigation used to work the cap and optimise flavour, colour and tannin extraction β€” providing concentration and depth of fruit flavour whilst keeping tannins plush, the hallmark of the Grey Label style. Select batches completed fermentation in barrel, contributing mid-palate texture, whilst others finished fermentation on skins, providing structural length and focus. Alcohol 14.5%, closed under screw cap.

Vintage Conditions

The 2021/22 season in McLaren Vale began with a wet early spring before dry conditions prevailed β€” December recorded just 0.4mm of rainfall, with January fortunately dry save for one heavy fall of rain in late January. February temperatures were ideal, with no days above 35Β°C and temperatures staying in the high 20s and low 30s β€” mostly cooler conditions that helped retain excellent natural acidity, varietal expression and very good colour. McLaren Vale lies nestled between the Mt Lofty Ranges and the rolling white sand beaches of Gulf St Vincent β€” a warm Mediterranean climate renowned for its soft and velvety Shiraz with pronounced berry, spice and chocolate flavours. The 2022 vintage delivered a Grey Label Shiraz of outstanding complexity, plushness and enduring Wolf Blass distinction.
