Appearance

This distinguished Barossa Valley Shiraz presents a deep, opaque purple-black core with vibrant crimson edges, demonstrating exceptional colour intensity characteristic of premium small-batch production. The wine exhibits impressive viscosity, with thick, slow-moving legs that cling to the glass, indicating substantial body, concentration, and optimal ripeness from the 2019 vintage.

Aroma

The bouquet exudes captivating aromas of ripe blackberries and violets, beautifully interwoven with hints of smoky oak that add depth and complexity. Layers of blueberry, black cherry, and liquorice emerge with aeration, whilst subtle notes of vanilla, cedar, and cracked black pepper from careful oak maturation provide additional dimension. A whisper of dark chocolate and espresso rounds out this generous, inviting aromatic profile.

Palate

On the palate, this Shiraz delivers a symphony of flavours, including ripe dark fruits, chocolate, and spice, all beautifully balanced by velvety tannins. The blackberry and violet notes from the bouquet seamlessly transition, joined by plum, mocha, and cinnamon nuances. The wine's structure is impeccable, with fine-grained tannins providing elegant framework without heaviness. A long, satisfying finish showcases lingering dark fruit, subtle oak, and warming spice that evolves gracefully.

Pairs With

Slow-cooked lamb shoulder, ribeye steak with peppercorn sauce, braised beef short ribs, venison, mature hard cheeses, barbecued meats, or rich chocolate torte.

Review

Deep crimson and packed with ripe Doris plum, black cherry and boysenberry fruit notes. Hints of dried cranberry, baking spice, liquorice, fruit-and-nut chocolate, tapenade, violets and roasting meats. Full bodied, with compact, powdery tannins and some fine acidity. Nice red plum notes flow in on the palate, adding detail and a few lumens to the ripe fruit on show. Long finish too.

Winemaking Notes

The Schild Estate Edel Small Batch Shiraz 2019 represents the pinnacle of Barossa Valley winemaking craftsmanship. Fruit was hand-selected from premium vineyard parcels, with meticulous attention paid to optimal ripeness and flavour development. Following a gentle destemming process, the must underwent a controlled fermentation in small-batch open fermenters, allowing for careful extraction of colour, flavour, and tannin through traditional pump-overs and gentle plunging. The wine was then matured in a combination of French and American oak barriques, with a proportion of new oak contributing subtle vanilla and spice notes whilst allowing the exceptional fruit quality to remain at the forefront. Extended barrel ageing developed the wine's complexity and integrated the tannin structure, resulting in a harmonious expression of premium Barossa Shiraz.

Vintage Conditions

The 2019 vintage in the Barossa Valley proved to be exceptional, characterised by near-ideal growing conditions that produced wines of remarkable concentration and balance. The season commenced with adequate winter rainfall, replenishing soil moisture reserves and setting the stage for healthy vine growth. A mild spring encouraged even budburst and flowering, whilst the summer months brought warm, dry days tempered by cool nightsβ€”perfect conditions for flavour development and natural acidity retention. Crucially, the absence of extreme heat events allowed for extended hang time, enabling the fruit to achieve full phenolic ripeness whilst maintaining freshness and vibrancy. Harvest commenced in optimal conditions, with fruit arriving at the winery in pristine condition, displaying intense colour, concentrated flavours, and beautifully ripe tannins that are the hallmark of this outstanding vintage.
