Kaesler Old Vine Shiraz 2023 is a blend of three incredible estate old vine vineyards located around the Kaesler winery in the Barossa Valley — elegant, balanced, and complex, with rich red fruits, delicate tannins, and the hallmarks of Kaesler Shiraz that have earned this wine 94–95 points from five respected critics. Red currant, raspberry, and a hint of plum on the nose; bright, fresh, and floral with vanillin oak in the background; pure red fruits on the palate with a softer acid structure and long, fine tannins to finish. Hand picked from three estate blocks, fermented on skins for 7 days, and matured for 16 months in new and seasoned French oak puncheons before bottling in early February 2025.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Ruby red with purple hues — the vibrant, concentrated colour of a Barossa Valley old vine Shiraz from three estate blocks, with the depth and clarity that 16 months in French oak puncheons and careful hand picking deliver.

Aroma

Red fruited, bright, and floral — red currant and raspberry with a hint of plum, fresh and inviting with vanillin oak in the background. The elegant, characterful bouquet of a Kaesler Old Vine Shiraz from a cool, late La Niña vintage.

Palate

Pure-fruited and elegantly structured — red fruits on the palate with a softer acid structure and long, fine tannins to finish. The elegance and depth of flavour that the winemakers identified as the defining character of the 2023 vintage.

Pairs With

Beef and other red meat dishes, or slow-roasted root vegetables. A Barossa Shiraz with the elegance and structure to reward both the table and the cellar.

Finish

Long, fine, and satisfying — red currant, raspberry, and vanillin oak fading with the delicate tannins and soft acid structure that make Kaesler Old Vine Shiraz 2023 one of the most elegant expressions of the vintage.

Winemaking Notes

Crafted from three estate old vine blocks harvested from late March into early April in a classic later season. Each parcel hand picked and fermented on skins for 7 days before pressing and racking to oak for malolactic fermentation. Matured for 16 months in new and seasoned French oak puncheons prior to bottling in early February 2025. 14.5% ABV.

Vintage Conditions

The 2023 Barossa Valley vintage was shaped by La Niña conditions — one of the wettest and coolest springs on record, resulting in delayed budburst, a flow-on effect on ripening and picking decisions, and a vintage running 3–4 weeks later than usual. Disease pressure was elevated by the wet conditions and required diligent vineyard management. Kaesler’s ongoing regenerative farming techniques proved their worth, building resilient vines that continued to produce outstanding fruit. The result: wines of elegance, structure, depth, and length of flavour.
