Savaterre Chardonnay 2024 is a seductive, tightly coiled Beechworth Chardonnay of great focus and precision — a serious, cerebral wine that is a harmonious amalgam of aromas, flavour, intensity, and length, and one that will continue to evolve, mature, and reveal its multiple facets over the coming years. 2024 was an exceptional vintage: long warm days and cool nights allowed slower ripening, with small crop per vine and a mature, close-planted vineyard delivering the perfect conditions for finesse and precision. A beautiful wine at the beginning of a long journey.

Appearance

Bright, glossy golden — the luminous, concentrated colour of a Beechworth Chardonnay of genuine intensity and exceptional vintage character from Savaterre’s mature, close-planted vineyard.

Aroma

Glossy and creamy with a savoury nutty element — honey nougat, spicy oak, and a mix of nectarine, pear, lime, and melon, with fine powdery grip to the texture and something of a sour yoghurt flavour adding complexity and depth. A tightly coiled bouquet of outstanding potential.

Palate

Firm cut of grapefruit acidity balanced by glossy, creamy richness — nectarine, pear, lime, and melon with savoury nutty character, spicy oak, and a tangy, savoury finish of outstanding length. Seductive and precise, with the focus and intensity of a wine that has a long, long journey ahead.

Pairs With

Roasted chicken, pan-seared scallops, lobster bisque, grilled barramundi, and aged hard cheeses. A Chardonnay of this focus and precision belongs at a table that appreciates wines of genuine cerebral depth and regional character.

Vintage Conditions

2024 was an exceptional vintage for Savaterre Chardonnay. Long warm days and cool nights allowed slower, more measured ripening — aided by the small crop per vine and the maturity of the close-planted Beechworth vineyard. These are the years for finesse and precision, and the 2024 Savaterre Chardonnay is the result: a seductive, tightly coiled wine of great focus that will continue to evolve and reveal its multiple facets over the coming years.

Reviews

“This is a richer iteration of Savaterre Chardonnay with not much in the way of struck match. It’s glossy and creamy but has a firm cut of grapefruit acidity, there’s fine powdery grip to texture, a savoury nutty element and something of a sour yoghourt flavour, honey nougat, spicy oak, a mix of nectarine, pear, lime and melon with a tangy and savoury finish of outstanding length.” — 96+ Points, Gary Walsh, Winefront

Producer History
Savaterre is nestled in the mountains of north-eastern Victoria, just outside the picturesque town of Beechworth — a site discovered in 1996 by owner and winemaker Keppell Smith after an expansive search through Australia’s quality wine regions. The mild summer days, cool climate elevation, and rolling foothills of the Victorian Alps provided the magic terroir combination Keppell had been seeking. Intensely focused on the creation of outstanding, individualistic wines far removed from the mainstream, Keppell looks to the wines, winemaking, and viticulture of the Old World as his inspiration — from vineyard aspect through to the use of natural yeasts and the finest French barriques, combining the art and the science of winemaking in his drive to produce wines of the highest order. Beechworth itself is blessed with beautiful views, fantastic local produce, outstanding dining, and the historic town at its heart — a region with a growing wine presence that has recently been recognised as an independent wine region.
