Winemaking Notes

The grapes for the Piano Piano Sangiovese Rosé 2023 were machine harvested in the cool of the night. The grapes were de-stemmed only and gently pressed. 75% of the wine was fermented in a stainless steel tank and 25% was fermented in a selection of older French oak barriques and hogsheads. There was no malolactic fermentation and the wine was bottled early to keep the wine fresh. This winemaking approach focuses on creating a savoury European-style rosé with textured dry finish. The combination of stainless steel and older French oak fermentation adds complexity whilst maintaining freshness, resulting in a rosé with aromas of cherries, touch of spice and confectionary notes that flow through to the palate.

Vintage Conditions

This rosé is made from Sangiovese grown on a cool east-facing block in the King Valley. The Sangiovese was picked at the ideal ripeness to make a savoury European-style rosé. 2023 was a slightly cooler than average year without any extreme heat. Because of a very wet and stressful spring it was a difficult growing season. Fortunately post-December the summer became more normal. February and March dried out with ideal mild days which resulted in a fantastic year in the King Valley for rosé. The season was three weeks later than average and the winemakers feel fortunate to have ended up with the wines they have in the cellar. The cool east-facing vineyard site and ideal late-season conditions produced Sangiovese with perfect balance of cherries, spice and textured dry finish.
