Passing Clouds The Angel Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 is the flagship Cabernet from one of Bendigo’s most celebrated producers — a barrel selection of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon barrels each year, matured for 17 months in 100% French oak and a minimum of 10 months in bottle before release. Born from what the winery describes as a challenging vintage, yet remaining genuinely true to style, The Angel 2023 is a sophisticated and extremely age-worthy expression of Bendigo Cabernet Sauvignon that regularly shows well at 20 years of age. Drinking incredibly well in its youth, with many years of stories to come.

Appearance

Deep ruby garnet — the rich, concentrated colour of a Bendigo Cabernet Sauvignon of genuine depth and distinction.

Aroma

Delicately bright forest fruits, violets, boysenberry, and blackberry lead an expressive and layered bouquet, parried with a plethora of spice — clove, star anise, cinnamon, bay leaf, green peppercorn, and black olive weaving through in a nose of genuine complexity and regional character.

Palate

Firm, juicy tannins coat the mouth and mix seamlessly with delicate red and dark fruits, while undertones of cigar box, chocolate, and earthen floor add to the savoury nature of this soft yet complex Cabernet. Careful cellaring will only reward those with the fortitude to wait.

Pairs With

Roast lamb, beef tenderloin, slow-braised short ribs, aged hard cheeses, and game. A Cabernet of genuine structure and complexity that suits the finest table and the longest cellar.

Winemaking Notes

Fruit is 100% de-stemmed and hand sorted before being traditionally vinified in open stainless-steel fermenters, hand plunged twice daily, with a portion of batches undergoing post-ferment maceration. All batches are matured in 100% French oak for 17 months. The Angel is then a barrel selection of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon barrels — after 12 months in oak, barrel selection occurs to create the optimal blend, with the selected barrels aged for an additional 5 months. A minimum of 10 months of bottle maturation follows, beginning the development of a wine that regularly shows well at 20 years of age.

Vintage Conditions

2023 was another challenging year viticulturally for Bendigo — following flooding in the region in late 2022, a mild and wet summer made weather a constant threat throughout the growing season. A later harvest allowed for longer hang time and increased character development, and fortunately the fruit was clean. The extra time on vine is more than apparent in a vintage showing increased complexity — a challenging year that ultimately delivered another exceptional iteration of The Angel.

Vineyard Notes

The Angel 2023 is sourced from the Maiden Gully vineyard, also known as Balgownie Estate, which overlooks Myer’s Creek in Bendigo. Planted from 1969 and sitting at 210 metres above sea level on sandy loam soils, Maiden Gully shows the classic Bendigo climate — warm and semi-arid, with approximately 500mm of rainfall per year. Vines of this age and provenance consistently deliver the concentration, depth, and character that define The Angel year after year.
