Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin is one of the most complex and distinctive gins in the world — 47 handpicked botanicals, prepared in exceptionally soft spring water from a private Black Forest source, distilled and matured in traditional earthenware containers to produce a gin of unrivalled depth, character, and a tremendously racy finish. A good third of those 47 ingredients come from the Black Forest itself, including local cranberries — the distillery’s secret weapon — that give Monkey 47 a character no other gin can replicate. Appearance

Aroma

Monkey 47 is produced using 47 handpicked botanicals — a third of which are sourced directly from the Black Forest — prepared in exceptionally soft spring water from the distillery’s own Black Forest source. The botanicals include native Black Forest herbs, berries, and the distillery’s signature local cranberries, combined with exotic Asian botanicals that reflect the eclectic biography of the gin’s originator. The spirit is distilled and then matured in traditional earthenware containers — a process that adds a further layer of complexity and integration to the finished gin. Nothing about Monkey 47 is conventional, and that is precisely the point.

Producer History

The story of Monkey 47 begins with Montgomery Collins — an enigmatic figure whose life reads like a novel. The son of a British diplomat, Collins spent his childhood in East Asia before serving in the British Royal Air Force during the Second World War. After the war, he found himself among the ruins of Berlin, where he helped rebuild the city’s zoo — adopting a Black Forest monkey named Max as a companion along the way. He eventually settled in the Black Forest, where he opened a small guesthouse and began distilling a gin from a recipe that drew on everything his extraordinary life had given him: the botanicals of the Black Forest, the exotic spices of Asia, and the traditions of British gin-making. The number 47 reflects both the 47 botanicals in the recipe and the year Collins settled in the Black Forest. His recipe was rediscovered decades later and brought to life as Monkey 47 — a gin as eccentric, complex, and compelling as the man who created it.
