Henschke Johann's Garden Grenache Mataro 2024 — Barossa Valley
Johann's Garden is one of Henschke's most evocative Barossa wines — a tribute to the Silesian and German pioneers who planted vines in the valley's sandy red soils more than 150 years ago. The wine draws its name from the old garden vines that have endured the Barossa's warm, dry summers for generations, producing fruit of extraordinary concentration and character.
The 2024 vintage marks a shift in the blend: 60% Grenache with 40% Mataro, sourced from low-yielding Barossa old vines of 35 years and beyond. The two varieties were vinified separately before being aged for 10 months in oak hogsheads — 3% new, 97% seasoned — preserving the vivid fruit and structural integrity that define this wine's appeal.
Tasting Notes
The 2024 opens with bright aromatics of raspberry, black cherry and fresh plum, lifted by violet, bergamot and a thread of lavender. Savoury nuances of nutmeg, oregano and liquorice add complexity, with cedar providing a gentle woody frame. On the palate, the wine moves from plush red-fruit generosity — redcurrant, pomegranate, rhubarb — into a long, structured finish underpinned by lively acidity and supple, fine-grained tannins.
Winemaking
Grenache harvested 29 February 2024; Mataro harvested 5 April 2024. Varieties fermented and matured separately, then blended prior to bottling. Aged 10 months in oak hogsheads, 3% new / 97% seasoned. 14.5% ABV.
