Henschke Hill of Grace 2018 is one of Australia’s most celebrated and collectible wines — 100% Shiraz from pre-phylloxera material brought from Europe in the mid-1800s, grown on the Hill of Grace Vineyard in the Eden Valley and managed with organic and biodynamic practices. The 2018 vintage is the year Henschke celebrated their 150th anniversary of family winemaking, and the season delivered a wine worthy of the occasion: stunning deep ruby in colour, spicy and complex on the nose, and rich, plush, and beautifully integrated on the palate. Presented with Vinolok enclosure and wooden gift box. Harvested 21–29 March 2018.

Appearance

Stunning deep ruby — the profound, concentrated colour of a great Eden Valley Shiraz from vines whose roots reach back to the mid-1800s.

Aroma

Spicy, complex, and deeply compelling — blackberry, dark red plum, and blueberry lead a dark-fruited bouquet of extraordinary depth, with sage, bay leaf, thyme, anise, black pepper, nutmeg, and cedar weaving through in layers of genuine complexity. A nose that rewards every return to the glass.

Palate

Rich, plush, and beautifully integrated — layers of spicy dark fruits, pepper, sage, musk, and clove are balanced by bright acidity and excellent depth, before long, elegant, fine, velvety tannins carry the wine to a finish of extraordinary length and refinement. A palate that speaks of old vines, great terroir, and 150 years of Henschke winemaking knowledge.

Pairs With

Roasted prime rib, slow-braised lamb shoulder, aged hard cheeses, and game. A wine of this stature deserves an occasion worthy of it — and the patience to cellar it until that occasion arrives.

Winemaking Notes

100% Shiraz from pre-phylloxera material brought from Europe in the mid-1800s, grown on the Henschke Hill of Grace Vineyard in the Eden Valley and managed with certified organic and biodynamic practices. Harvested between 21 and 29 March 2018. Matured for 18 months in a combination of 20% new and 80% seasoned oak hogsheads (83% French, 17% American) prior to blending and bottling. Presented with Vinolok enclosure and wooden gift box.

Vintage Conditions

A moderately wet winter combined with average spring conditions allowed the vines to grow well in mild weather. Ideal flowering conditions in late spring and early summer led to near-average yield potential. Late December turned warm and dry, ensuring healthy canopies with low disease pressure. January and February were typically warm and dry, with above-average overnight temperatures — conditions the old-vine Hill of Grace vineyard handled with characteristic resilience, its deep roots withstanding the warming and drying effect on the topsoil as the balanced crops matured toward autumn. March and April provided light and warmth to the Eden Valley, delivering full and balanced maturity across all varieties, with warm sunny days and cool nights ensuring pristinely healthy fruit arrived in the fermenters. In Henschke’s own words: “All in all, the 2018 vintage will be considered a standout of the decade. Shiraz was certainly one of the highlights of the season, fittingly so in the year we celebrated our 150th anniversary of family winemaking.”
