Tasting Notes
Appearance
Opaque maroon — the deep, rich colour of a Barossa Valley Shiraz fermented in small batches with 7 days on skins and hand plunging twice daily for maximum extraction and the dense, spicy fruit character that the region is renowned for.
Aroma
Plums and mulberries, soy, tobacco leaves, coffee grinds, sarsaparilla, and blackcurrants — a complex, layered, and distinctly Barossa bouquet with the depth and richness that 18 months in French and American oak delivers. Blackberry, rich floral, star anise, liquorice, and hazelnut notes adding further complexity and appeal.
Palate
Bold, smooth, and juicy — layers of plum, cherry, and exotic spice with ripe black fruits, Aussie bush notes, anise, liquorice, and earth, supported by supple, satiny tannins that bring easy drinking qualities without any undue heaviness. Seamless and finely balanced, with excellent length and a lingering, delectable finish. No angles, no loud notes — just a smooth-running, medium-bodied delivery of Barossa Shiraz paced out across the palate in a bright spiciness.
Pairs With
A natural companion for slow-roasted lamb, grilled beef, duck confit, aged hard cheeses, and the finest Barossa table — Château Tanunda Grand Barossa Shiraz is equally at home at a weeknight dinner or a special occasion, delivering exceptional quality and value at every pour. Drink now to 2034.

Reviews
Ken Gargett | Wine Pilot — 94 Points
“A definite contender for best value of the year, this is compelling evidence that one can drink extremely well, wines chockful of flavour, without breaking the bank. Opaque maroon in colour, on the nose we have notes of plums and mulberries, soy, tobacco leaves, coffee grinds, sarsaparilla and blackcurrants. There is a sleek texture through to the satiny tannins and the wine has excellent length. Seamless and finely balanced, this is delicious drinking now and will surely remain so for at least ten to fifteen years, if you can keep your hands off it that long. Cracking value.”
Jeni Port | Wine Pilot — 93 Points
“Full flavoured and nicely detailed, this charming Barossa Shiraz works the two sides of the Barossa Shiraz coin well, combining all the things we love about the region’s Shiraz but without any undue heaviness. Celebrates ripe black fruits, Aussie bush notes, anise, liquorice, earth and background oak, while being supported by supple tannins that bring some easy drinking qualities to the wine. No angles, no loud notes, just a smooth running, medium bodied delivery of Shiraz paced out across the palate in a bright spiciness. A fab all-rounder at an equally fab price.” Drink: 2026–2030.
Sam Kim | Wine Orbit — 93 Points
“This is instantly appealing on the nose, showing blackberry, rich floral, star anise, liquorice, and hazelnut characters, followed by a flavoursome palate that’s succulent and silky. Wonderfully structured by beautifully integrated tannins, finishing lingering and delectable.” At its best: now to 2034.

Winemaking Notes
Fermented in small batches to retain sub-regional characters — after destemming, the Shiraz ferments for 7 days on skins in open fermenters and is hand plunged twice daily to encourage maximum extraction whilst retaining the dense, spicy fruit flavours that Barossa Shiraz is renowned for. Gently pressed before maturing for up to 18 months in a combination of new and seasoned French and American oak barrels. Gold Medal, Syrah du Monde 2026.
Producer History
Château Tanunda — Icon of the Barossa — was established in 1890 on the site of some of the Barossa Valley’s first vines and its first winery. The majestic bluestone château and vineyards are a living testament to the colourful history and spirit of Australia’s most famous wine region, and are listed on the Register of State Heritage Places.
The founder’s grand vision was to build a Château dedicated to crafting fine-quality wines to rival the French in production and quality — and at its peak, Château Tanunda became the largest winery in the Southern Hemisphere, sourcing grapes from 560 local growers and shipping wine to a wine-starved Europe. A veritable “Ivy League” of Australian winemakers worked or studied at Château Tanunda, including Australia’s first qualified Oenologist, Prof. Soebels, as well as Bill Seppelt, Grant Burge, Robert O’Callaghan, and Geoff Merrill. The estate produced the 1972 Jimmy Watson Trophy winner.
Abandoned by Southcorp and left as a shell of its former glory, Château Tanunda was rediscovered by John Geber in 1998. Since then, the Geber family has breathed new life into the estate — revitalising the vineyards, restoring the historic cellars, and re-establishing Château Tanunda amongst the elite of Australian wine producers. Today the estate exports to over 30 countries, is internationally recognised for its rare Old Vine Expressions and The Everest wines, and stands as one of the great stories of Australian wine heritage restored. 135 years of winemaking. The Barossa’s success. Still going.
