The GlenDronach Allardice 18 Year Old is named in honour of James Allardice — the flamboyant founder of GlenDronach Distillery and a pioneer of sherry cask maturation — and is a fitting tribute to his legacy. Matured exclusively for 18 years in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks and bottled at 46% ABV, the Allardice is a deeply sherried East Highland single malt of extraordinary richness and complexity. Bright deep gold with a tawny centre, with sweet and complex aromas of fudge, fruit compote, glacier morello cherries, and allspice, and a palate of aged Oloroso, toasted walnut bread, and a touch of chocolate orange. The finish is exquisitely complex and remarkably long — a single malt of genuine distinction and outstanding value for its quality, style, and maturity.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Bright deep gold with a tawny centre — the striking, concentrated colour of an East Highland single malt matured exclusively for 18 years in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, with the depth and richness that nearly two decades of sherry cask maturation delivers.

Aroma

Sweet, delightful, and complex — fudge, fruit compote, glacier morello cherries, and allspice lead, with aged Oloroso and toasted walnut bread adding layers of depth and warmth. A touch of chocolate orange weaves through a bouquet of extraordinary richness and character.

Palate

Rich and deeply satisfying — the full influence of 18 years in Oloroso sherry casks is evident in every sip, with fruit compote, fudge, and chocolate orange carrying through to a finish of exquisite complexity and remarkable length. Non-chill filtered at 46% ABV, delivering the full texture and character that GlenDronach is celebrated for.

Pairs With

The GlenDronach Allardice 18 Year Old pairs beautifully with dark chocolate, Christmas cake, dried fruits, aged hard cheeses, and rich game dishes — a deeply satisfying dram equally rewarding after dinner as it is on a cold Highland evening.

Production Notes

Matured exclusively for 18 years in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, the Allardice is non-chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV — preserving the full texture, natural colour, and extraordinary complexity that nearly two decades of sherry cask maturation imparts. The distillery draws its water from the Dronac Burn in the valley of Forgue, Aberdeenshire, and the Allardice represents the pinnacle of GlenDronach’s commitment to exclusive sherry cask maturation — a style pioneered by James Allardice himself nearly two centuries ago.

Producer History

GlenDronach Distillery was founded in 1826 by James Allardice in the valley of Forgue, deep in the East Highland hills near Aberdeenshire — one of Scotland’s first licensed distilleries, and a pioneer of sherry cask maturation. The distillery has passed through the stewardship of Scotland’s most eminent whisky producers, including Walter Scott, Charles Grant, and William Teacher & Sons. GlenDronach was mothballed from 1996 until 2001 — a period during which floor maltings were decommissioned and the distillery’s direct heat, coal-fired stills were eventually converted to steam power in 2005. GlenDronach was one of the last Scottish distilleries to maintain this traditional method, and expressions distilled pre-1997 are considered extremely desirable by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
