A debut that arrives fully formed and deeply confident.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Pale straw with golden hues — the fresh, luminous colour of a Victorian Chardonnay crafted for balance, expressiveness, and the clean, elegant finish that defines the Five Vineyard Onyx style from its very first release.

Aroma

Fresh and lively — creamy layers of lemon curd, white peach, and ripe stonefruit, with a subtle oak influence that adds softness and finesse without ever overwhelming the fruit. The expressive, inviting bouquet of an inaugural Chardonnay release that arrives fully formed and deeply confident.

Palate

Creamy and well-balanced — lemon curd, white peach, and ripe stonefruit with bright acidity that lifts the palate and carries the fruit through to a clean, elegant finish. The subtle oak adds softness and finesse, creating a Chardonnay that is expressive, poised, and immediately enjoyable.

Pairs With

Fresh seafood, grilled salmon, roast chicken, soft cheeses, and light pasta dishes — the bright acidity, creamy stonefruit character, and clean finish make Five Vineyard Onyx Chardonnay a deeply versatile and satisfying partner for the table. Serve well chilled.

Who Should Drink This?

Five Vineyard Onyx Chardonnay 2024 is ideal for lovers of elegant, fruit-forward Chardonnay with genuine freshness and balance — those who appreciate the style without the heavy oak and butter of older-school expressions. It’s a natural choice for anyone who enjoys cool-climate Victorian whites, and a compelling introduction to the Five Vineyard estate range. Equally at home at a relaxed lunch or a more considered dinner party.

Is It Worth Ageing?

As an inaugural release crafted for freshness and immediate enjoyment, the 2024 Onyx Chardonnay is best enjoyed now and over the next 2–3 years while its bright acidity and creamy stonefruit character are at their most expressive. Store in a cool, dark environment and serve well chilled at 8–10°C.

What’s Similar?

Lovers of Five Vineyard Onyx Chardonnay may also enjoy other cool-climate Victorian Chardonnays from the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula for a comparable freshness and elegance, or explore Burgundian-style Chardonnays for a similar balance of fruit, acidity, and restrained oak. Within the Five Vineyard range, the Estate Rosé offers another expression of the estate’s commitment to freshness and varietal precision.

Why Do Critics Love Victorian Chardonnay?

Victoria’s cool-climate wine regions consistently produce Chardonnay of exceptional freshness, balance, and elegance — wines that showcase bright natural acidity and expressive fruit without the heaviness of warmer-climate styles. The Plenty Region’s elevation and growing conditions are particularly well-suited to this style, and the Five Vineyard Onyx Chardonnay is a compelling early demonstration of what the estate and the region are capable of producing.

Producer History

Named for the five members of the Vella family — parents Paul and Caroline and siblings Alex, Sam, and Olivia — FIVE Vineyard is located in the suburb of Mernda, just 45 minutes from the Melbourne CBD. The family planted the first vines in 2019, and construction began in 2021 on an architecturally designed winery, restaurant, and event centre set among 14 hectares of vines. The estate is planted to Sangiovese, Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir, with the first vintage produced in 2022. The Onyx Chardonnay is the newest addition to the Five Vineyard estate range — and on the evidence of this inaugural 2024 release, one of the most exciting.
