Apsley Gorge Pinot Noir 2025 from Tasmania's east coast delivers pure, elegant Pinot fruit with a rich, textured palate and a long, persistent finish. Crafted by Brian Franklin in a Burgundian-influenced style, this is a wine of sophistication and quiet intensity. The producer regards the 2025 as one of its best Pinot Noirs.

Tasting Notes

Aroma

Pure and expressive Pinot fruit with complexity developing from the wine's natural yeast fermentation.

Palate

Elegant and sophisticated, with clear, persistent fruit, textured tannins and an intriguing richness through the mouthfeel and finish. The wine has the structure and depth to continue developing in bottle.

Winemaking

Harvested in late April, the 2025 was cold soaked before primary fermentation, then matured for 14 months in French oak barrels at 12°C. Malolactic fermentation occurred naturally, with natural yeast contributing further complexity.

Apsley Gorge & Tasmania

Situated on Tasmania's east coast at Bicheno, Apsley Gorge is closely associated with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Brian Franklin's approach draws strongly on Burgundy, with an emphasis on purity, restraint and texture that is clearly expressed in the 2025 Pinot Noir.

Cellaring & Serving

Already expressive, this Pinot Noir also has the fruit concentration, tannin and persistence to reward further bottle development. Serve at 14–16°C.

Winemaking Notes

Situated on the east coast of Tasmania at Bicheno, Apsley Gorge takes its name from a mountain pass and shares with the other east coast wineries the capacity to produce premium quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Former abalone diver and lobster fisherman Brian Franklin planted Apsley Gorge with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the early 1990s, with the first vintage in 1993. The vineyard, approximately 7 hectares, is farmed as low yield and non-irrigated to ensure the stability of the fruit, whilst hand pruning and hand picking maintains the quality of the grapes from vineyard to winery. Brian took over the winemaking in the late 1990s and quickly became recognised as an exceptional winemaker. His winemaking skills in the traditional French style were honed originally with Philippe Charlopin, one of Burgundy's most notable winemakers. Brian has worked every vintage in Burgundy since 2000, lately working with Philippe's son Yann at Domaine Charlopin-Tissier.

Vintage Conditions

The 2024 vintage saw the Pinot fruit achieve excellent phenolic ripeness whilst concealing the berry characteristics beneath very firm tannins. The wine is initially closed, displaying some funky notes, before opening up to reveal complex Pinot character. This wine will fully reveal itself once decanted, rewarding patience with layers of depth and expression that speak to both the vintage conditions and Brian's masterful Burgundian-influenced winemaking approach.
