Felton Road Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2025 is the estate blend from one of Central Otago’s most uncompromising producers — a wine drawn from four Bannockburn vineyards (Cornish Point, Calvert, MacMuir, and The Elms) farmed under strict biodynamic and organic principles since 1991.

The 2025 vintage tells a story of resilience: a severe katabatic frost in November — the most extensive in twenty years — was followed by a benign flowering, a protracted dry summer that concentrated flavours, and a slow, measured conclusion to ripening that endowed the wines with impressive breadth, harmony, and finesse. Dark florals, rose, cherry compote, raspberry, and boysenberry with fine dusty tannins and a persistent, tension-driven finish. A classic Felton Road Bannockburn.

Tasting Notes

Appearance

Deep, luminous ruby — the characteristic colour of a biodynamically farmed Central Otago Pinot Noir from a season of concentrated, slowly ripened fruit.

Aroma

A classic Felton Road nose — dark florals of rose and violet lead with elegance and precision, followed by cherry compote and a subtle undercurrent of berry leaves. The aromatic profile is complex and restrained, reflecting the estate’s non-interventionist winemaking philosophy and the 2025 season’s slow, measured ripening.

Palate

Textural and rich on the first attack, with a fine line of berry leaves, raspberry, and boysenberry running through the palate. Despite the generosity of fruit, there is a clear sense of tension that prevents this from ever being fruit-driven — the hallmark of a great Bannockburn Pinot Noir. Fine and dusty tannins frame the finish with precision, leaving a line of pure fruit and petals as the wine eventually fades. Lovely persistence and a finish of impressive length and finesse.

Pairs With

A natural partner for duck confit, roasted lamb, mushroom-based dishes, venison, salmon, and aged soft cheeses. Equally compelling with earthy, umami-rich preparations — truffle pasta, wild mushroom risotto, and charcuterie boards. Serve at 16–18°C.

Wine Sellers Direct Verdict

Felton Road Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2025 is one of the most compelling expressions of Central Otago Pinot Noir available at this price point — a wine that earns its reputation through discipline rather than indulgence. The 2025 vintage is particularly noteworthy: the katabatic frost of November, the most extensive in twenty years, reduced yields in localised areas, but the vines that recovered produced fruit of exceptional concentration and finesse. The protracted dry summer and cool autumn finish gave the wine a tension and persistence that sets it apart from more immediately generous styles. Compared to the single-vineyard Felton Road MacMuir 2023, the Bannockburn is broader and more harmonious — a blend that captures the best of all four estate vineyards; compared to Mt Difficulty Bannockburn, Felton Road is more precise and tension-driven — less immediately generous, more structured for the long term. This is the bottle we would recommend for anyone who wants to understand what makes Central Otago Pinot Noir genuinely world-class. Capable of rewarding extended cellaring, and an exceptional gift for any Pinot Noir enthusiast.

Felton Road’s Flagship Pinot Noir

The Bannockburn Pinot Noir is Felton Road’s flagship regional blend — the wine that brings together fruit from all four estate vineyards and expresses the house philosophy in its most complete and harmonious form. While the single-vineyard wines highlight the individual character of MacMuir, Calvert, Cornish Point, and The Elms, the Bannockburn is where those sites are unified into a single, definitive statement. It has become the defining introduction to Felton Road’s winemaking philosophy and the wine collectors reach for first when building a Central Otago vertical. Production is naturally limited because every bottle is sourced exclusively from the estate’s own vineyards, contributing to strong and consistent demand among collectors worldwide.

Who Should Drink This?

Felton Road Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2025 is for serious Pinot Noir enthusiasts who appreciate tension, finesse, and the discipline of non-interventionist winemaking over immediate fruit-driven generosity. It is the natural choice for collectors building a Central Otago vertical, for those who want to experience biodynamic viticulture at its most expressive, and for anyone looking for a genuinely memorable gift for a wine lover. It rewards patience — drink now with decanting, or cellar for 5–10 years for greater complexity.

Why Is Felton Road Famous?

Felton Road’s story begins with meticulous site selection and vineyard design in 1991 — a founding commitment to refusal to compromise that has never wavered. A strict 100% estate policy, fully organic and biodynamic viticulture (BioGro and Demeter certified), gravity-flow winemaking, wild yeasts, wild malolactic fermentation, and an avoidance of fining and filtration all serve a single purpose: to allow the four Bannockburn vineyards to express themselves as purely as possible. The estate is also B Corp certified and a member of IWCA (International Wineries for Climate Action). The result is Pinot Noir of authentic complexity and terroir-driven character that has established Felton Road as one of the defining producers of the Southern Hemisphere.

Exploring the Felton Road Range

The Bannockburn is the ideal entry point into the Felton Road range — a blend that captures the harmony of all four estate vineyards. For those wanting to explore individual vineyard expression, Felton Road MacMuir Pinot Noir 2023 offers the MacMuir vineyard’s distinctive character as a single-vineyard expression.

What’s Similar?

For a comparable Central Otago Pinot Noir at a similar tier, Mt Difficulty Bannockburn Pinot Noir offers a more immediately generous expression from the same subregion — choose this if you prefer a richer, more approachable style. Nanny Goat Central Otago Pinot Noir 2023 is a more accessible everyday Central Otago option for those exploring the region at a lower price point. Within the Felton Road range, Felton Road MacMuir 2023 offers a single-vineyard alternative with a more site-specific character.

Vintage Conditions 2025

Abundant rain in September and October replenished soil-water reserves. After a later than average budbreak, the vines grew well until a katabatic frost — the most extensive in twenty years — struck the vineyards on 3 November. Losses were localised and occurred early enough for many vines to recover. A benign, settled period coincided with flowering and a successful fruit set compensated for the frost damage. Summer saw even temperatures and a protracted dry period, slowing ripening and concentrating flavours. After February finished with a warm flourish, the weather cooled distinctly, especially at night. Harvest commenced at Cornish Point on 25 March, followed by Calvert and The Elms, with all Pinot Noir completed at MacMuir on 16 April. The slow and measured conclusion of ripening endowed the wines with impressive breadth, harmony, and finesse.

Winemaking Notes

The unique gravity-flow winery enabled the grapes to be gently destemmed directly into open-top fermenters without pumping, retaining 18% as whole clusters. Traditional fermentation with a moderately long maceration on skins extracted good colour and tannin with considerable depth of flavour. Aged for 13 months in 24% new French oak barrels from artisan Burgundian coopers. Fermented with indigenous yeast and malolactic fermentation. Not fined or filtered. Viticulture: Gareth King. Winemaker: Blair Walter. Vigneron: Nigel Greening.
