Penfolds Grange 1980 is a remarkable opportunity to experience one of Australia's most celebrated wines at more than four decades of age. A predominantly Shiraz blend drawn from several South Australian regions, this vintage reflects Grange's distinctive combination of powerful fruit, traditional craftsmanship and new American oak maturation.

The 1980 release comprises 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Magill Estate, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra. It spent 18 months in new American oak. Penfolds' historical tasting assessment, recorded in 1999, described chocolate, cherry and dried fig, alongside dense fruit, grainy tannins and a sustained finish.

At this stage of its life, Grange 1980 is best appreciated as a mature collector's wine. The historical tasting profile provides valuable context, but individual bottle condition, provenance and storage history will strongly influence the experience today.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Red-purple in Penfolds' historical assessment; mature bottles may show further development.

Nose: Chocolate, cherry and dried fig, as recorded in the producer's 1999 tasting note.

Palate: Historically described as dense and chewy, with developed fruit and grainy tannins.

Finish: Sustained and structured in the original assessment, with the present character dependent on bottle condition.

Food Pairing

Consider roast beef, slow-cooked lamb, mushroom dishes or mature cheddar. With a wine of this age, restrained, savoury food is often the best companion, allowing its developed character to take centre stage.

Cellaring & Serving

This is a mature vintage to approach for drinking rather than indefinite further cellaring. Store carefully, stand the bottle upright ahead of opening if sediment is expected, and taste a small pour before deciding whether decanting is appropriate. Extended aeration may not benefit every older bottle.

Vintage & Winemaking

The 1980 growing season began with warm conditions before a cooler harvest and late ripening. Grange was made from 96% Shiraz and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, matured for 18 months in new American oak, with fruit drawn from five South Australian growing areas.
