d’Arenberg The Footbolt Shiraz 2022 takes its name from Footbolt — the pride of Joseph Osborn’s racing stable, and the horse he made the hard decision to sell in 1912 to purchase the d’Arenberg property. A sacrifice that has given McLaren Vale one of its most enduring and beloved Shiraz labels. The 2022 vintage is 100% McLaren Vale Shiraz of genuine richness and balance — crimson-purple in colour, fragrant with dark plum, blackberry, boysenberry, black pepper, and a touch of liquorice, and opulent on the palate with ripe, velvety tannins and an impeccable balance of acidity, alcohol, and oak.

Appearance

Bright medium purple with a subtle ruby halo — the vivid, concentrated colour of a McLaren Vale Shiraz of real depth and character.

Aroma

Lifted and fragrant — dark cherries, black plum, and a hint of Dutch liquorice lead an expressive and inviting bouquet, with boysenberry and subtle black pepper adding complexity and a distinctly McLaren Vale character.

Palate

Rich and opulent — black plums, cherries, and blackberries are intertwined with integrated mocha, Dutch liquorice, and black pepper on a palate of genuine depth and generosity. Tannins are ripe, rich, and juicy, with a beautifully balanced acid line that makes the wine approachable now but will reward cellaring for years to come. A rich and balanced example of a McLaren Vale classic.

Pairs With

Slow-roasted lamb, beef short ribs, cured meats, aged hard cheeses, and hearty Mediterranean dishes. A McLaren Vale Shiraz built for the table and the cellar in equal measure.

Winemaking Notes

Small batches of Shiraz are gently crushed and transferred to five-tonne headed-down open fermenters, remaining separate until final blending. Foot treading is undertaken two-thirds of the way through fermentation — a traditional technique that extracts colour, tannin, and complexity with a gentleness that mechanical methods cannot replicate. The wine is then basket pressed and transferred to a mixture of new and used French oak barriques to complete fermentation. Barrel ferments are aged on lees with no racking until final blending. No fining or filtration prior to bottling. Oak maturation: 12 to 18 months. Chief Winemaker: Chester Osborn. Senior Winemaker: Jack Walton. Harvest dates: 25 February – 29 April. Alcohol: 14.5% ABV. Residual sugar: 1.4 g/L. pH: 3.43. Titratable acidity: 6.8 g/L.

Vintage Conditions

The 2022 McLaren Vale vintage began with a good winter and early spring rains that set the vines up very well. November was approximately three degrees colder than average, causing variable set — Mourvèdre suffered the worst — and yields finished around 15% down from the large 2021 crop. December was bone dry, before January delivered 33mm against a 20mm average, again setting the vines up well. February, March, and April were almost entirely rain-free and mild, free of hot or cold spells, resulting in very good leaf retention and even ripening across all varieties. The red berry skins were very thick and crunchy with no shrivel, resulting in high tannin content — requiring juice to be pulled off skins sweeter than usual to achieve the desired balance. In Chester Osborn’s own words: “I believe the reds from this vintage are the best I have seen in years. They show great colour, fruit fragrance, richness, acidity, tannins and style.”
