Review of the 2019 Crittenden Estate Peninsula Chardonnay

"Happy to call this a wine of style and grace though it has more power than those words imply. Seaspray, creamed honey, nectarine and white peach flavours shoot straight and true through the palate, acidity managed just so, mouthfeel too. It works mostly in a fresh-faced way for now but it will step up a gear given another year or so in bottle." 92+ Points Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, December 2020, Drink: 2022 - 2025+

Winery & Vintage Info

True to its name, The Peninsula range of wines represents the Crittenden family’s dedication to over 35 years of viticulture and winemaking in this cool maritime region. Parcels of grapes have been selected from various vineyards across the Mornington Peninsula to produce vibrant and aromatic wines which truly reflect their ideal climatic origins.

2019 has provided yet another wonderful growing season in a string of recent ideal vintages. The mild summer and moderate yields have combined to produce full flavoured wines with texture and poise as well as helped retain a higher than normal level of natural acidity. This year will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the greats!

The fruit for the 2019 Crittenden Estate Peninsula Chardonnay was hand harvested and whole bunch pressed to a mixture of new, one and two year old French oak barriques (225 litre barrels) and puncheons (500 litre barrels) and were allowed to ferment spontaneously using natural yeast. Some temperature control was exerted over the barrel ferments to ensure the retention of clean fruit characters. The wine was stored, subject to a topping regime, in the same barrels for 8 months, where the lees were stirred back into the wine at regular intervals to add to the complexity and richness. In Dec 2020 the wine was assembled in tank where it was prepared for bottling.
