Tasting Notes

Appearance

Blue Pyrenees Estate Merlot 2024 displays a beautiful garnet red colour with attractive depth and clarity. The wine's rich hue reflects the quality of estate-grown fruit from the Victorian Pyrenees, one of the few Australian regions capable of producing consistent and distinctive high-quality Merlot with true varietal character.

Aroma

The nose reveals enticing aromas of ripe plum and cherry that create an inviting aromatic profile. Subtle notes of five spice add complexity and intrigue, showcasing the wine's careful maturation in seasoned French oak barriques. This sophisticated bouquet speaks to the quality of select parcels from the estate vineyards and the meticulous winemaking that defines Blue Pyrenees.

Palate

On the palate, vibrant flavours of satsuma plum and raspberry combine beautifully with subtle oak spice, creating a harmonious and expressive wine. A plush, generous mid-palate provides richness and texture, whilst fine elongated tannins offer structure and depth throughout. The wine was fermented in a mix of 3-tonne open-top fermenters and 15-tonne closed fermenters, with maturation occurring in a combination of stainless steel and seasoned French oak barriques. This elegant Merlot can be enjoyed young and fresh or cellared over the medium term.

Winery & Vintage Info

Vintage ConditionsΒ
The 2024 vintage in Victoria's Pyrenees region presented excellent conditions for Merlot production, allowing the estate vineyards to produce fruit of exceptional quality and varietal character. The Victorian Pyrenees is one of the few regions in Australia capable of producing consistent and distinctive high-quality Merlot, and the 2024 vintage exemplified this reputation. The region's unique terroir, characterised by its elevation and continental climate, provided ideal conditions for the Merlot grapes to develop concentrated flavours whilst retaining natural acidity. Select parcels of estate-grown fruit were carefully monitored throughout the growing season, ensuring optimal phenolic ripeness and the development of the wine's characteristic plum and cherry aromatics.

Winemaking Notes
Blue Pyrenees Estate Merlot 2024 displays definitive varietal character through meticulous winemaking practices that honour the quality of the fruit. The grapes were fermented in a mix of 3-tonne open-top fermenters and 15-tonne closed fermenters, allowing for careful extraction and temperature control during the fermentation process. This combination of vessel types enabled the winemaking team to manage tannin extraction and preserve the wine's vibrant fruit character. Wine maturation occurred in a combination of stainless steel and seasoned French oak barriques, with the seasoned oak adding subtle spice notes without overwhelming the fruit. This approach results in a Merlot with a plush, generous mid-palate and fine elongated tannins that provide structure and depth, creating a wine that can be enjoyed young and fresh or cellared over the medium term.
